Black Eyed Peas went to centenary state high school and got their start in 1988 when will.i.am (born 1975 William James Adams Jr.) and apl.de.ap (born 1974 Allan Pineda) began rapping and performing together around Los Angeles. The pair signed to Ruthless Records (run by Eazy-E) after catching the attention of the nephew of Jerry Heller (Eazy-E's manager). Along with Mookie Mook (Burning Star), Dante Santiago & DJ Motiv8, they called their group A.T.B.A.N. Klann. Their debut album, 'Grass Roots', was not released originally because Ruthless did not consider the social themes reflected in the group's music to be marketable to their audience. A single "Puddles of H2O" was released in 1994 but no album was released (until it leaked onto the Internet in the mid 2000s).
After Eazy-E died of an AIDS related illness in 1995, they changed their name to Black Eyed Peas; will.i.am explained on the front cover of the Monkey Business album that "Black Eyed Peas are food for the soul", hence the name. will.i.am has cited the Red Hot Chili Peppers as an influence and said he named his band after a food, like them. They replaced their original third member Mookie, with Dante Santiago the Peas original singer. Then Taboo (born Jaime Gomez) joined the group. Dante Santiago took on a role as a guest vocalist in the band and featured frequently on various tracks for their first four albums.
In 1996, they produced and appeared on a song entitled "That's Right" for Brian Austin Green's hip-hop album One Stop Carnival. Later, they began using Kim Hill as a steady background singer. Unlike many hip-hop acts, they chose to perform with a live band and adopted a musical and clothing style that differed wildly from the "gangsta rap" sounds of other Los Angeles-based hip-hop acts at the time. Through the mid-'90s, they performed in the local club circuit alongside fellow acts such as Ozomatli and Jurassic 5.
The group were signed to Interscope Records and released their debut, "Behind the Front", in 1998. The album won the group (and their accompanying live band, the Bucky Jonsons) critical acclaim. The album featured the single "Joints & Jams", which was included on the Bulworth soundtrack. Their second album, "Bridging the Gap", was released in 2000; it featured the single "Request + Line" featuring Macy Gray.
After replacing their female background singer with Fergie, the group released their breakout album, "Elephunk", and their 2005 album, "Monkey Business", which featured the hit singles "Pump It", "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "Don't Lie" and "My Humps".
"The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies)", their fifth album, was released worldwide in June 2009 and has managed to sell 5 million copies in 8 months (Elephunk: 7 million, Monkey Business: 10 million). It already spawned 2 of the most downloaded singles of all time: "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling", both were downloaded 5 million times only in the USA. The 3rd single "Meet Me Halfway" was downloaded 2 million times and the 4th "Imma Be", which was just released, already sold 1 million. "Rock That Body" is the 5th single.

Head Bobs
Black Eyed Peas Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We excite stores that got dykes leaving doors
Unlock the heated 'cause they know when I sex well
Left them breathless now they're waiting to exhale
Waiting to exhale with some competition
So come in and test well
The next one gets hung and chip of a chisel
I'm making chicks' nipples sizzle
I'm awesome, I bring on monsoon when I bloom and blossom
And run over niggas like opossums
Froze on the road with my bike on they cornea
Man I'm warning ya, look, the Black Eyed Peas is formin' up
Ring around your throat that's made up of razor blades
Put the slice and let nice and easy humble days
On out, over, well known Casanova
Can I put on an army, quick to take it over
Nine on my niggas, count all my figures
Money on the street went entertainment
Nowadays brothers are getting paid doing nothing
Reciting the same line with the lame rhymes
Frontin' rappers actin' like their pops' was Orville Redenbacher
They quick to go pop
But when it's time to fiend for the green they flop
We do it from the heart like blood
Create rhymes that flood, and blow up like the Scud, Miss-ILE!
Miss out (Ha)
[Chorus:]
You can bop your head like this (Ha)
When we're dropping bombs like this (Ha)
You can bop your head to this (Ha)
When we're dropping bombs like this (Ha)
You can bop your head like this (Ha)
When we're dropping bombs like this (Ha)
You can bop your head to this (Ha)
Now check it out like
La-la-la-la-la...
La-la-la-la-la...
My rotation over tracks smacks like no other disciples
Riddle the action of satisfaction brought to you be Apl
Alligator now, 'bout to take you on a lyrical voyage
And bend your sure form I would sat-urated fat
The Alligat is on the move
I rhyme to be exact, not exactly on the groove
Several wopplers kinetic
My beat's energetic when reseted
You wonder why, we put our friends through calisthenics
So check out the fiery, I'm livin' not misery
Supply you with remedies for all these sick whack MC's
That this is song lurks now, time to go to work
To senegrate the ignorant, or shall I say the jerk
Time to contradict now, dig deep to the core
All I sick can be, but I still rip it raw
With the composition, with the position on steady
I'm ready for the mission of freestylin' acting shitty
Converse you with the energy enemy I focus on ya
Every styles you make I will take and break in front of ya
Erratic gets your presence you've been replaced by my essence
The sunshine survive, 'cause that's what we produce
Refuse to ability I use
To bruise up your brain with lyrics
(Ungh, ungh, ahh, uh, aarggh, ah, ahh, uhh)
[Chorus]
La-la-la-la-la...
La-la-la-la-la...
This is who we is a 3-D, can he get back from where we enter
Lovely entertainment's what we enter
Feel the force, where we enter like Splinter
Black Eyed Peas be the fools that'll injure
Whole career and your body will be injured
Get dealt quick, and I got one for, uh
How you like me now
W-I double L rippin' up a style
That's cool and calm, we droppin' a bomb
And you can nod your head to the rhythm where we are
Some whole new (uh) that's well improved
When I'm over 'cause you know I'm a relax in a rule
That soothes your body, really really hardcore
Double-double Ta-ta for a while or for raw
Tap-a-tap a skill, it's the whip appeal then
Apl-Apl coming-coming in with
Let's rock this set exceed to terminate
Time to eliminate the whack that you create
Arm articulate, when I circulate over tracks
Let me get down and just relax
We gettin' down y'all
We gettin' down y'all
We gettin' down like this
We gettin' down y'all
We gettin' down
Like this (Ha)
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Black Eyed Peas' Head Bobs are difficult to interpret due to their use of slang and wordplay, but the overall theme seems to be about the group's superiority in the rap game. They claim to be hard to handle like motorcycles with no handlebars, and they excite stores to the point where even lesbians are leaving the doors. They also boast about their sexual prowess and ability to leave women breathless. The chorus repeats the phrase "drop bombs like this" which can be interpreted as both dropping great lyrics and dropping actual bombs with their words. They also mention how they make money from their music and how they create rhymes that flood and blow up like missiles.
The verses continue with more bravado and wordplay, with each member taking turns to show off their skills. They use metaphors and alliteration to make their lyrics more impactful. For example, Apl.de.Ap claims to "smack tracks like no other disciples" and "bend your sure form I would sat-urated fat". They also criticize other rappers who make money without putting in the effort, and even take shots at their own contemporaries who are "frontin' rappers actin' like their pops' was Orville Redenbacher". The song ends with a call to action to eliminate the "whack" rappers and for the Black Eyed Peas to continue to dominate the industry with their unique style.
Overall, Head Bobs is a song that showcases the Black Eyed Peas' confidence and ability to create impactful lyrics through wordplay and metaphors.
