Black Ivory is the name of an R'n'B group from Harlem, which had a number o… Read Full Bio ↴Black Ivory is the name of an R'n'B group from Harlem, which had a number of hits in the 1970s, including "Don't Turn Around," "You And I", "I'll Find A Way (The Loneliest Man In Town)", "Spinning Around", "What Goes Around (Comes Around)" and "Will We Ever Come Together" and "Mainline". The group featured songwriter and prolific disco producer Leroy Burgess, Stuart Bascombe and Russell Patterson. They were managed by Patrick Adams, an executive at the Today/Perception record company. Burgess was the lead voice of the majority of their hits in the early '70's With Today/Perception being a small label, the promotion of Black Ivory's singles scarcely got beyond the East Coast. This lack of exposure, coupled with the rise of disco and the fact that Patrick Adams was beginning to branch out into other projects, caused Black Ivory to lose steam. Oddly enough, the group recorded several uptempo songs in the disco vein ( such as "Big apple Rock," "Walking Downtown (On A Saturday Night)", "What Goes Around (Comes Around)" and, later, "Mainline" but, not being known for the style, they were unable to compete when disco became the dominant music style. While he was with Black Ivory, Burgess frequently collaborated with Adams in writing songs. He also wrote the groups' final hit, "Mainline," which was recorded after he left the group.

For starters male singers today dont sing falsetto, or at least I haven't heard any and the meaning of love has all but disappeared and acoustic soul isnt such a thing, its mostly electronic now. So no I dont believe this stye is ever returning, not that we really need it because nothing is going to beat the real deal. This song right here... People in my generation don't appreciate the quality of this type of music. The orchestration reflects the tone of the lyrics. They do not put music out like this anymore. That's true love right there. There are no words to express the love felt in this song. So much is being said in this song of few actual words. Some hear mere words or lyrics. I envision the story clearly being told, as I have with so many of Black Ivory's songs. No this isn't just a song. This is our history. This is our heritage... Truly a work of art... The pure beauty that comes through this music is awesome. As a young man in the DMV I would sometimes pass up the dance, lean against the wall near the speaker, and listen with my eyes closed to the music while listening and sipping a beer, a tear would come to my eye because the music was so damn beautiful. These young people don't have a clue. Some of their parents may have exposed them to real music. I graduated in 73 also. I remember talking to a young lady I had a crush on . I was kind of shy. I discovered Black Ivory on You-Tube while sampling other music. I instantly fell in love with their sound! As a singer, songwriter, and producer, I grew up on this type of great music, which continues to influence me today. The big difference between these songs from the seventies, and many songs today, is that producers used orchestration with real instruments, brass, percussion, and strings. This helped paint a visual image, and story in the listener's mind, and the lyrics had substance. The other big difference is that this style of music was real, classic R & B (Rhythmn and Blues). It was an actual style of music that you don't always hear too much today.. Also, each section of the country had its own distinctive sound, and flavor. It wasn't always embraced by mainstream listeners. Many urban artists, and labels sought a crossover hit song. This generation has changed, thankfully. It's great that the gap between urban, and mainstream music has been bridged, and crossover music has now morphed into pop. However, like Jazz, and the Blues, let us preserve the rich, historic musical legacy, and heritage of pure R & B for future generations. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

I don't know if you follow the Indie music scene at all. Although R&B is not a pervasive theme in the aforementioned scene, a lot of Indie artists draw their inspiration from orchestration production themes used in the 1970's, which tends to evoke emotive trigger points in the listener. If you have a chance check out "Always Tomorrow" by Tokyo Tea Room - a super mellow, dreamy song with that 1970's production quality oozing out of every note.

Thanks Danny. Yes Larry Blackmon of Cameo did play drums on the Original album version of You And I which accompanies this video and the vinyl single. Unfortunately there are vinyl reprints of the Don't Turn Around LP that have a different version on them. The original master was lost and the song was remixed with new parts for the Black Ivory Then And Now album. This is the version that survives on CD and vinyl reprints today. Larry was not a part of the band but was another local musician from Harlem who we knew and our producer Patrick Adams booked him for that session only. He did an OUTSTANDING job as did all of the other musicians involved. The original You And I recording is a masterpiece in my view and I feel lucky to have been a part of it. I hope that you like the new songs. More to come in 2015. Happy New Year everyone.

Brother, this song is simply one of my all-time favorites! If this song was a mirror, 1971 New York would be the reflection. So Harlem, 116 street: Jerry's Den, The Apollo, AJ Lester and the fly guys pumping quarters on 8th ave. I see all that when I listen to this song.
What's so amazing about this record is the seven minute instrumental and hook that brings this song to it's unique crescendo. Not many songs form thus era were good enough to deserve an soulful extension like tis one. Yeah, you brothers were way ahead of the curve and totally outside the box, musically. I will always have a connection to this kind of music. Thank you for the music that soothes the minds of men!
