The band is not to be confused with Zakk Wylde's solo project (sometimes known as Book of Shadows after its only album) or with Pride & Glory, Wylde's southern rock band.
History
In 1992, Ozzy retired after the No More Tears tour, which led Zakk to form his own solo band Pride & Glory, blending potent bluesy southern rock with heavy metal. In 1994 Ozzy decided to come out of retirement, and the numerous recording sessions for Ozzmosis took place. Around this time, Zakk was also offered the open guitar slot in Guns N' Roses and had a hard time deciding whether to tour with Ozzy or join Guns N' Roses. Neither project panned out. This gave Wylde the opportunity to record his own acoustic solo album, "Book of Shadows." After limited commercial success with Book Of Shadows, in 1998, Zakk and drummer Phil Ondich formed Black Label Society and recorded their debut album "Sonic Brew." Nick Catanese had been Zakk's touring rhythm guitarist since the Book Of Shadows tour (Zakk records all guitars on his albums). Craig Nunenmacher has been drumming for the band since 1919 Eternal (2001) following Phil's departure. Previous bass players include current Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo, former Megadeth 4-stringer James Lomenzo, and current Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez, who also played with Zakk on the No More Tears, Ozzy tour.
The band had their song "Fire It Up" featured as a bonus song in the PlayStation 2 game Guitar Hero. Zakk Wylde has an avatar in the video game "Guitar Hero: World Tour", and the song "Stillborn" also appears.
Doomsday Jesus
Black Label Society Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blacked out, hatred running through & through
Horsemen rolls, tomorrow's fading fast
Make damn sure, ain't nothings gonna last
Ohh
Ohh
Doomsday Jesus we need you now
Ooh
Doomsday Jesus we need you now
Souls that bleed have nowhere left to run
Blind the crucifix and shoot the gun
Generals speak, we leave a trail of dead
Keep on killing 'til there's nothing left
Ohh
Ohh
Doomsday Jesus we need you now
Ooh
Ooh
Doomsday Jesus we need you now
The lyrics of "Doomsday Jesus" by Black Label Society explore themes of destruction, loss, despair, and the need for salvation. The song speaks to the idea that sometimes we must let go of our past and everything we thought we knew in order to move forward. The opening line "kill your past and all you thought you knew" suggests a sense of urgency and the need to let go of what has come before. The line "blacked out, hatred running through & through" reinforces this idea, and the imagery is powerful, suggesting a sense of being consumed by darkness and negativity.
The song then shifts to explore the idea of a doomsday, and the need for Jesus to come and save us. The lyrics "souls that bleed have nowhere left to run" creates a feeling of desperation, and the line "blind the crucifix and shoot the gun" suggests that we have lost all faith in traditional forms of salvation. The idea of generals speaking and leaving a trail of death creates a sense of hopelessness, and the repeated chorus of "Doomsday Jesus, we need you now" emphasizes just how desperate we are for salvation. The message of the song is bleak, but the powerful and raw delivery of the lyrics and music make it a captivating piece.
