Moon River
Black Mary Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend, Moon River, and me

Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Overall Meaning

The song "Moon River" by Black Mary has become an iconic classic, resonating with people of all ages since it was first composed in 1961. The song describes a dreamer who is following someone, the "dream maker," he loves wherever he goes, across the wide expanse of the river "Moon River". The dream maker is also named the "heart breaker" which implies that the relationship may not be healthy, and possibly one-sided. The two lovers are described as "drifters" wandering through the world and searching for something beyond the horizon, a metaphor for new experiences and adventures.

The lyrics are evocative and beautifully written, capturing the bittersweet feeling of being in love and wanting to escape with the person you cherish. The song's expressive theme invites listeners to embrace their own inner wanderlust and dreams of living a more fulfilling life. The chorus, "Moon River, wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style some day," is both a declaration of intent and a promise to oneself that someday, everything will work out and that adventure and freedom will be found around the next bend.

I was a young foreign medical student in Dublin in the early 80’s and went to all Mary Black’s concerts whenever I had the money for a ticket. I’m much older today but still shed a tear whenever I hear her singing. It brings back great memories of hard old days and an Ireland that I loved. Thanks Mary for the memories.

Mary, right after my father's funeral, my mother, two sisters and I went to a beatiful inn in Tennessee's Appalachian Mountains. During dinner, sitting near the fireplace in the gorgeous dining room, this song was played and we have a wonderful memory of it. My mother has just passed away and today, St. Patrick's Day, is their wedding anniversary. I sent this song to my sisters.
