love this song. i love how its gets more powerful and almost upbeat in the chorus, almost as if a depressingly sad person is trying to smile through the pain and put a happy face on an emotionally beaten down soul. i never hear that in other sad songs, they all just seem to do sad. its amazing and its heart renderingly accurate to life.
i know this album isnt the classic sabbath flavour, but its a musically fresh and unique sabbath and one of my favourites.

It was written in the studio in response to Ozzy's dad (Jack)'s passing. It hit Ozzy very hard. Amazing how the sad energy was turned around into a positive thing ie this great song.

But I'm glad I did as they are two incredible and underated albums. I know a lot of people will disagree, but they are my favourite all time Sabbath albums along with sabotage and paranoid

I have been saying that for years. Many years ago, a friend and I went to the local record shop (well before the age of cd's and digital downloads) to see what was available. I had just started to listen to Black Sabbath as they had become (and still are) my favorite go to band for a metal fix. I went to buy Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die. My buddy said don't waste you money on those two albums, they suck". I'm happy to say that over 40 years later, I still have the original albums as well as the cd's now and STILL listen to them every now and again.

When John Osborne's Father died,Ozzy was going through some heavy shit(Tragedy). He wrote this song for us all. One of my Top B.S. favorites. Mr. Iommi is incredibly innovative.If he didn't actually create Heavy Metal,He certainly defined it. A guitar master if there was ever one. He will go down as one of the greatest lead guitarists of all time. Fact.

@mike n Ozzys dad made the Sabbath crosses they wore. Also came up with the name Blizzard of Ozz. He bought Ozzy a PA , even after Ozzy got arrested for burglary'. I'd say Ozzy's dad loved him very much and supported him.

I saw this tour, it’s the album that broke them up, because Van Halen was opening up and blowing doors. I know this is not one of their favorite albums, there’s no Paranoids or Iron Mans on it, but it’s the most different album they ever made, and I love it! It’s real snapshot in time.

Michael Raufer. I like keyboards in the chorus of this song but maybe guitar sound lacks of power to sound like real heavy metal. Check out early version of Junior's Eyes with Dave Walker on vocals. This album for whatever reason was never a big hit. But the musicianship and arrangements were the best on any Sabbath album. Ozzys singing was as good as on any album. And omg Iommis guitar was genius. Maybe one of the best solos ever on Juniors eyes.

This and Technical Ecstasy are incredible albums! The music and production are far from their earlier 70s albums and sound more like Ozzy solo albums from 80-81 and what rock was all about in the early and mid 80s.

These guys could damn well do it all. Ozzy’s haunting/despair-laden/soulful voice could really bring you in and his strong British enunciation coupled with the phenomenal writing and playing of Tony, Geezer, and Bill Ward just can’t be beat. When you sit down and listen to a track like this, you begin 2 realize rock needs to go back to its roots badly. Musicians like these no longer exist. this song is the perfect example of WHY Ozzy was such an important factor of 70s Sabbath: just listen to the Dave Walker version & you'll immediately see how superior Ozzy's vocal melodies are! This talent for writing amazing vocal melodies to great riffs is what has given him longterm success in his solo career. The unbiased observer can readily see that there is a common thread running throughout all Ozzy-related material, from the 1st Black Sabbath LP all the way to his most recent solo album. His incredible vocal melodies STAND OUT LIKE A NEON SIGN. The idiots who say Ozzy "can't write" are most likely not musicians so they don't know what the hell they're talking about (presumably they're confusing the ability to put rhyming words together side by side, i.e. POETRY, with actual SONGWRITING). In case ppl didn't know, writing LYRICS is a focus of poetry, writing actual SONGS involves putting MELODIES to said lyrics. As in, singing the lyrics in a particular way that sounds memorable, catchy, epic, etc. I can write lyrics in fricking Japanese & if the MELODY in which they are SUNG in is great/catchy, then you have a good SONG that sticks in yr head, etc. So, yes, "writing lyrics" is not synonymous with "writing a song." So the BS "Bob Dailsey/Geezer wrote all the LYRICS in Sabbath/Solo Ozzy" argument we often hear from Ozzy critics is MOOT. Hence, I don't give a fuck if "Daisley wrote the lyrics." The question is, can he write VOCAL MELODIES? Cool anecdote: Elton John once, to demonstrate his songwriting talent, made up a song on the spot by using sentences FROM A WASHING MACHINE INSTRUCTIONS BOOKLET LOL! My point: the lyrics can fucking be about anything. It matters not. The point is, can the musician put a great melody to the words? Apparently Dailsey can't. But Ozzy can. The musicians know exactly what I've just said. The non-musos probably still have no idea what they just read. Am I a massive Ozzy fan? No, not really. It's just that, as a musician and metal fan, I much dislike it when iconic metal musicians are slandered to no end by FALSE arguments. Hopefully this comment wakes some ppl up to the truth regarding Ozzy's apparent "inability to write fucking poems." --i.e. putting together words that rhyme with each other; something a child can do (oh, and also Geezer Butler & Bob Daisley, quick, give them a fucking medal; they can write words that rhyme!). But SINGING these rhyming words IN a catchy melody? No one in the metal scene can do that as well as Ozzy can. And this comment has adequately explained why: the very strong resemblance in Sabbath's/solo Ozzy vocal lines irrespective of which guitarist actually wrote the riffs. Truth: Ozzy 's vocal melodies was 50% of why Sabbath succeeded. The other 50% was the Riff King. As a musician, i am familiar with the songwriting process, and I know for a fact that the lyrics in and of themselves do not count for shit. maybe they do in pop, where the ballads are aimed at teen girls & are about nauseating love stories. But for metal, which mostly has cheesy lyrics often inspired by movies, books, etc. (which means, given enough incentive, almost ANYONE can piece together a few paragraphs of more or less rhyming words about epic battles, sci fi, the occult, blow jobs or just random psychedelic BS like Pink Floyd do), it plays next to zero importance. Again: this is NOT poetry. A lyric can be sung to an infinite number of possible melodies. If the melody sucks, the "deep meaning" of the words will not magically make the song sound better. Comprende? IN METAL, VOCAL MELODY IS KING. SECOND ONLY TO THE RIFF.

The undeniable truth is, Sabbath could have been as successful without iommi . The footprint belongs to Butler and Ozzie, the riff at times was mesmerizing More often garage band quality. If iommi had not been accepted back after the Jethro Tull experiment he would be practically unknown.

@Del Shoemaker Black Sabbath has done lots of great songs, but in my personal opinion, this was a complete masterpiece. Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill blended so perfectly. This song comes off so dramatically especially with Tony's guitar and Ozzy's singing about his dying father gives goosebumps. One of the best things I always loved was how the song actually goes to climatic finish and not just fade out. This song even further holds EVEN MORE of a special place with me since my dad passed away over a year and a half ago...

Yes Bill Ward was good at what he did and he played the drums for Sabbath in the early years. He was very good at downbeats.

I always thought Black Sabbath excelled more in drumming than gutar, because I was listening to Van Halen and Iron Maiden also, and loved Black Sabbath more for bass and drims

I firmly believe that this musicianship is some of the best around. Yes the lyrics are great and written by Geezer of course. However, his Bass guitar in this song captures the feel and Soul of what the song is about. Bill is playing the best percussion he can without overkill. Tony is really nailing the wailing and sadness in heavy Blues, but in this song all the instruments seem to compliment each other. Excellent!

loved it. saw the tour. we didn't want to say die, but we put it on hold when punk & MTV took over. our crowd went underground away from all pop for a long time. picked Sabs back up about ten years ago. still fucking love them. Happy Birthday Ozzy

I identify. I wasn't born until 70' but Sabbath became my favorite band by the time I discovered them in 1980. Looking back on the history of classic and acid rock(my favorite) I would say your 3rd sentence was amazing and I could feel it. "We didn't want to say die , but we put it on........."
