Orchid/Lord of This World
Black Sabbath Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're searching for your mind don't know where to start
Can't find the key to fit the lock on your heart
You think you know but you are never quite sure
Your soul is ill but you will not find a cure, yeah

Your world was made for you by someone above
But you choose evil ways instead of love
You made me master of the world where you exist
The soul I took from you was not even missed, yeah

Lord of this world
Evil possessor
Lord of this world
He's your confessor now!

You think you're innocent, you've nothing to fear
You don't know me you say but isn't it clear?

You turn to me in all your worldly greed and pride
But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die, yeah?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Black Sabbath's Orchid/Lord Of This World talk about a man who's lost his way and is searching for his mind but doesn't know where to start. The heart is locked, and he can't find the key to unlock it. The man thinks he knows the reason why he's in such a situation, but he's not quite sure. His soul is sick, but he cannot find a cure. The message of the song is simple; one needs to come to the Lord and seek His help to find their way out of the darkness.

The second verse talks about the world created by someone above, who made it with love. However, we choose evil ways instead of love. Whoever that "someone above" is, He made the singer "master of the world where you exist," and the soul he took from the man was not missed. The singer narrates himself as the "Lord of this world" and "your confessor now," talking about how people turn to him for various reasons when they want to find ways to fill their worldly desires. However, he asks them if they would call on him when it's their turn to die?

The song's message is ambiguous and suggests several interpretations. Some say that it's about the dangers of delving into the unknown and dabbling in the dark arts, while others see it as a critique of those who worship false gods or follow the wrong path. The lyrics are also open to interpretation that the singer could be talking about himself, which many see as the starting point for all of Black Sabbath's songs.
