Supernaut
Black Sabbath Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna reach out and touch the sky
I wanna touch the sun but I don't need to fly
I'm gonna climb up every mountain on the moon
And find the dish that ran away with the spoon

I've crossed the ocean, turned every bend
I found the crossing near a golden rainbow's end
I've been through magic and through life's reality
I've lived a thousand years and never bothered me

Got no religion, don't need no friends
Got all I want and I don't need to pretend
Don't try to reach me, 'cause I'd tear up your mind
I've seen the future and I've left it behind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Black Sabbath's song Supernaut are the expression of the boundless aspirations of human nature. The first verse talks about a desire to reach the sky and touch the sun, indicating that the singer wants to achieve great things, but not necessarily in a literal sense. The line "I'm gonna climb up every mountain of the moon" is a metaphor for overcoming challenges and obstacles, and the line that follows, "And find the dish that ran away with the spoon," represents the idea of fulfilling impossible quests.

The second verse suggests that the singer has already accomplished many things in life, having crossed the ocean and conquered every challenge. The allusion to the "golden rainbow's end" reinforces the idea that this person has reached a state of self-actualization and that their achievements have been incredibly rewarding. The lyrics "I've been through magic and through life's reality, I've lived a thousand years and never bothered me" demonstrate that the singer has had a full life and is unbothered by the trials and tribulations they have experienced.

The third verse reveals that the singer is content with their life and does not need anyone else. The line "Don't try to reach me, 'cause I'd tear up your mind" may suggest that the singer's mind is too complex for others to understand or that they don't want to be bothered by others. The final line, "I've seen the future and I've left it behind," implies that the singer is satisfied with what they've accomplished and is not intrigued by what the future holds.

How the actual freaking hell did this song not become one of the big ones? Hidden gems are always the best

@robertallen6710

Cuz in 1972 peeps were radio listening to Roberta Flack, Carpenters, etc. and it didn't fit into the mainstream...

@peternagy-im4be

@@robertallen6710 no accounting for taste

@MichaelLawrenceMagic

It always has been for me.

@TERRMINAITER96

I guess it's because it was never released as a single = no radioplay. Sabbath rarely released singles.

@tomflynn2912

Was always my favorite from Vol4..

This is definitely a "hidden gem" by Sabbath. Tony Iomi is the king of the riffs, and he really proves it on this awesome song. Why doesn't this song get more air time on the friggin radio??? Spectacular song!!

@RaheemToofaani

Tbh, im kinda happy that this song is not too popular, so that im one of the few lucky people that gets to enjoy this masterpiece lol...

@revolvermaster4939

It wasn’t hidden to people that bought their albums, Black Sabbath wasn’t played on the radio in the 70’s except on a station out of Little Rock after midnight on weekends on a show called beaker street, the only station I ever heard them on growing up in Baton Rouge.

@stephenlamley541

My favourite tune by them. I'm actually a raver i never liked rock until i heard sabbath and zeppelin. The older I get the broarder my tastes are getting. When younger if it wasn't underground type stuff we wouldn't go near it, too commercial how stupid you are when younger.
