Sweet Leaf
Black Sabbath Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alright now
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realize
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting you and your kind, oh yeah

I love you, oh, you know it

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you, sweet leaf, though you can't hear, oh yeah

Come on now
Try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf, oh yeah, baby

Come on now, oh yeah
Try me out baby, alright, oh yeah
I want you part of this sweet leaf, oh yeah
Alright, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh try me out
I love you, sweet leaf, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" seem to be a paean to marijuana, celebrating its ability to open up the mind and free one's spirits from the drudgery of everyday life. The song opens with Ozzy Osbourne addressing his listeners, urging them to pay attention to his words. He then reminisces about his first encounter with the titular "sweet leaf," which he didn't initially recognize but soon grew to love. He sings of the drug's ability to show him new ways of thinking and feeling, and how it helped to shake loose the malaise that had been weighing him down.

As the song progresses, Osbourne makes clear that he sees himself as an evangelist for cannabis, railing against the "straight people" who don't understand its power and warning that they are missing out on something truly special. He promises that soon the world will come to love "sweet leaf," and he invites the listener to join him in the experience, to "try it out" and see for themselves what all the fuss is about.

Overall, "Sweet Leaf" is a passionate and unapologetic celebration of marijuana culture, and of the sense of liberation and euphoria that many people associate with drug use.

Master of Reality was the first album I ever bought. It came about because I was sent by train with by my parents (with an older sibling) from home in Nth Herts to stay with a relative in Essex.

Crossing London by tube, EVERY single advertising display on EVERY escalator that we went on was taken up with a poster that was the front cover for MOR by this Band I'd never heard of: Black Sabbath. I still remember it vividly today, 50+ years later.

It was incredibly impactful for this impressionable 13 year old! I still remember the literally dozens of copies of that album cover beguiling me as I went down and later up these staircases.

I saved up and bought it with my pocket money and that was my pathway into the drug that is rock music.

p.s. my parents hated it! As they were supposed to 😅
