The Key
Black Stone Cherry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out here there's a hole in the sky
Doors open to the other side
I saw a two headed dog fightin' over a bone
Black haired woman turn into crows

I gotta take a step back and think this through
Gotta know it's true
I gotta know if I'm livin' in a dream
Is this what it seems
Gotta know anyone believes
How did I get lost, what's the final cost
Could you please help me find the key

Out here, under the willow tree
Deep down is where you'll find the key
I've been here once before maybe in a dream
Thylacines play tambourines

I gotta take a step back and think this through
Gotta know it's true

I gotta know if I'm livin' in a dream
Is this what it seems
Gotta know anyone believes
How did I get lost, what's the final cost
Could you please help me find the key

Out here the sayin' goes
Off with the lights and on with the show
Once it's dark the children play
They all join hands and dance around the grave

I gotta know if I'm livin' in a dream
Is this what it seems
Gotta know anyone believes

How did I get lost, what's the final cost
Could you please help me find the key

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Key" speak to the theme of searching for something deeper, almost spiritual in nature. There is a sense of unease and uncertainty in the opening verses, with imagery of a "hole in the sky" and a "two-headed dog fighting over a bone", which suggest a world that is not quite right. The transformation of a black-haired woman into crows is both eerie and intriguing, indicating a world of magic or perhaps even dark forces at work.

The chorus delves into the existential dilemmas of the singer, who is trying to make sense of their surroundings and their place within it. The repeated refrain of "Is this what it seems?" indicates a sense of distrust or confusion about the nature of reality, while the plea to "find the key" suggests a desire to unlock the secrets of the universe and uncover the truth.

The final verse introduces the idea of a "show" that must go on, even in the face of darkness and death. But there is also a sense of childlike wonder and joy, as the children dance "around the grave", suggesting that there is something beyond the physical world that can bring light and hope.

Overall, "The Key" is a song that speaks to the human desire for understanding and meaning in a world that can often seem chaotic and confusing. Its evocative imagery and haunting melody make it a standout track in Black Stone Cherry's discography.

Me too, love this band

Dillon Stidham

Sounds like Chris wrote this when he was having drug problems and depression. I'm so glad he didn't commit suicide he's ones of the best to ever do it. Maybe even better than Alter Bridge and Shinedown singers in my opinion. The style is so different

Leslie Ivey

I rock to Shinedown too but BSCherry has my heart
