Drown
Black Tambourine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm alone, walking home
When you walk up to me
And you ask if I'm free
For a walk by the sea

Once I loved you
Now I've found you
Just as soon as I kiss you

I remember the days
When we walked hand in hand
With our toes in the sand

Once I loved you

Then you left me
I don't love you anymore!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Black Tambourine's song "Drown" describe a moment of unexpected interaction between the singer and someone from their past. As the singer walks home alone, they are approached by an individual who asks if they are free to take a walk by the sea. The lyrics suggest that this person is someone the singer once loved; however, the singer's response to their offer is not as enthusiastic as one might expect given the circumstances. Instead, the singer expresses a sense of detachment and indifference towards this person, stating that they don't love them anymore.

The lyrics seem to capture a sense of emotional distance and coldness that can develop over time, particularly towards someone who has caused pain or hurt in the past. Despite the nostalgia that comes with reminiscing on the days of walking hand in hand with their former lover, the singer ultimately acknowledges that they have moved on and no longer have any feelings for this person. In contrast to the romantic themes typically found in love songs, "Drown" presents a more cynical and realistic portrayal of love and heartbreak.

Overall, the lyrics to "Drown" paint a picture of a moment of unexpected confrontation between the singer and their former lover. Through this interaction, we see the singer's emotional growth and the empowering feeling that comes with moving on from a past relationship.

I’m alone walking home
When you walk up to me
And you ask if I’m free
For a walk by the sea

Once I loved you
Now I drown you
Just as soon
As I kiss you

I remember a day
when we walked hand in hand
And our souls on the beach
With our toes in the sand

Once I loved you
Then you left me
I don’t love you anymore

I’m alone walking home
When you walk up to me
And you ask if I’m free
For a walk by the sea

Once I loved you
Now I drown you
Just as soon as I kiss you

Once I loved you
But you left me
And I don’t even miss you

The '60s girl group sound/feel is still alive (that is, in this case, with a noisy pop twist at least, anyway) and this is one of the songs that I found to be the most noticeable of the fact that it's modernized in some form or another. I love it!
