Fronted by Projekt Records' Sam Rosenthal, the band's line-up has changed significantly over time. The current lineup has Rosenthal on programming, guitar and keyboards, Jon DeRosa ( Aarktica) on vocals, and Henrik Meierkord on strings. The most notable former members of the band are Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls) on percussion, guitar & bass, and vocalists Athan Maroulis (ex-Spahn Ranch), Nicki Jaine, and long time vocalists, Oscar Herrera & Elysabeth Grant.
The style of Black Tape for a Blue Girl is generally described as "gothic", though their long catalog of music does not often gel with all of the contemporary standards of gothic music over time. The lyrics are by Rosenthal himself and explores powerful emotions of love, vulnerability, isolation, loss, jealousy, and passion.

There you are
Dreaming of the pendulum blade
Don't rush away
Don't say it's all okay
Halo Star
Could've gone far
So tell me you're happy
You're not
You're not
Halo Star
Your wishes I oblige
What can I do but oblige
Halo Star
Halo Star
Halo Star
There you are
Don't rush away
It's not okay
The song “Halo Star” by Black Tape for a Blue Girl has a melancholic tune and lyrics that express a feeling of lost love and regret. The song begins with the lines “Halo star, there you are dreaming of the pendulum blade” which could refer to someone lost in their thoughts. The next line “Don't rush away” gives the impression that the person is about to leave, and the singer doesn't want them to go. The line “Don't say it's all okay” suggests that something is not right, and there are underlying issues.
The second verse takes a darker tone and suggests a tragedy involving the person referred to as “Halo Star”. It appears that they have suffered an assassination which has shocked those around them, possibly leaving them feeling lost and without direction. The line “So tell me you're happy, you're not, you're not” is an indication that the person is not happy, but is trying to hide their pain. The chorus repeats the lines “Halo Star, your wishes I oblige, what can I do but oblige” indicating a sense of obligation and responsibility for the singer towards Halo Star. The song ends with the same lines as the beginning indicating that the pain and sense of loss still persist.
