House On Fire
Black Taxi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's always the kids who liked to get real dizzy
on the playground that got into drugs
It's always the guys who had girlfriends first
either went into finance or turned into thugs
I need someone like you
Those hollow figures just won't do
And I got to have you need me too
I just want to get along
I just want to get along, like a house on fire
I don't want to be alone
I don't want to be alone
Please just help me find you

All the girls staring up at the sun
find out too late the damage is done
All the daughters playing out in the rain
find out that the grown up games just ain't any fun
If you would be with someone like me
Go back to when we both were free
And get along famously

I just want to get along
I just want to get along, like a house on fire
I don't want to be alone
I don't want to be alone
Please just help me find you
Come on, come on turn me on
Come on, come on turn me on
Nothing would be finer

I just want to get along
I just want to get along, like a house on fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Black Taxi's song "House on Fire" explore themes related to human relationships, self-discovery, and personal growth. The song starts by addressing the idea that kids who liked to get dizzy on the playground and experimented with drugs were more likely to become drug addicts later in life. This can be interpreted as a warning about the dangers of early experimentation and how it can lead to lasting consequences.

The second verse shifts the focus to the difficulties of growing up and finding one's place in the world. The lines "All the girls staring up at the sun find out too late the damage is done / All the daughters playing out in the rain find out that the grown-up games just ain't any fun" suggest a loss of innocence and optimism. The song then turns to the idea of finding someone who is right for you and who can help you on your journey of self-discovery.

The chorus repeats the desire to "get along" with someone "like a house on fire," which is a metaphor for a strong and passionate relationship. The lines "Please just help me find you" suggest a longing for connection and a recognition of the difficulty of finding someone who is truly compatible. Overall, the song highlights the challenges of navigating life's ups and downs and the importance of finding like-minded people to share the journey with.

I was such a fan boy of them back in March of 2013. Went to one of their concerts they were impressed at my group of friends and I for being such fans. The band said we were like the cast of it's sunny... I just wanted the band to blow up and I swore they were going to blow up. but 4 years later they never did. Now I am getting an MSc in Entrepreneurship and management of the creative industries. So I can help future bands like the Black Taxi.
