No Halos
Black Water Rising Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No Halos

There's a wrench in the machine
There's a crack on armored souls
Who preach but do not practice
What their good book has sold
Now their truth won't set you free
It's a distorted twisted lie
Firmly anchored in deception
Where enlightenment is denied

Their singing to your heart
While locking chains upon your mind
From the cage of your submission
You claw at what's divine

Ain't no halos
Ain't no halo over anyones head
I don't give a damn what your good book said
There ain't no hope for the sinner no more

There's a wrinkle in the fabric
There's a flaw in the design

On a quest to find salvation
You have fallen from the climb

Overall Meaning

Black Water Rising's song No Halos is an introspective critique of organized religion and the hypocrisy that oftentimes follows it. The song starts with a comparison of religion to a machine and suggests that there are problems with the structure that runs it. The next verse talks about how the good book is preached but not always practiced, leading to a distortion of truth that does not lead to freedom or enlightenment. The chorus then tackles the idea of halos, saying that they do not exist and that no one is perfect in the eyes of any book or deity. The final verse acknowledges that flaws do exist and that the search for salvation can lead to a fall from the climb.

The band uses a combination of heavy guitars, pounding drums and gritty vocals to convey their message. The lyrics are simple yet impactful, and the repetition of the phrase "ain't no halos" throughout the chorus emphasizes the message of imperfection, reminding the listener that no one is exempt from making mistakes.
