Darkness
Blackmore's Night Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a dark autumn night
I was so very far from sleep
I longed to walk beneath the stars
Into the wood so dark and deep

Neither myth nor fairy tale
Could keep me from the path to the maze
But eyes upon me I could feel
Hidden in the shadows watching always

Something in the darkness pulled me deeper
Something in the madness eased my mind
Was I awake or was I dreaming
Cut the strings that bind me to mankind

Once while I was sitting in my room
One cold and silver winter's day
I could hear another worldly call
Try as I might I could'nt turn away

Something in the darkness pulled me deeper
Something in the madness eased my mind
Was I awake or was I dreaming
Cut the strings that bind me to mankind

Somewhere in between the moss and the stone
The wind and the wood became my home
I layed myself down upon the green
When the ivy overgrew I could never leave

Something in the darkness pulled me deeper
Something in the madness eased my mind
Was I awake or was I dreaming
Cut the strings that bind me to mankind

Something in the darkness pulled me deeper
Something in the madness eased my mind

Was I awake or was I dreaming
Cut the strings that bind me to mankind

Overall Meaning

The song "Darkness" by Blackmore's Night is a haunting melody that speaks of the call of the unknown and mysterious. In the first verse, the singer speaks of a dark autumn night where they longed to walk beneath the stars into the wood that was so dark and deep. The singer is drawn to the darkness and seems to feel a pull towards it. The second verse speaks of a cold silver winter's day where the singer hears another worldly call that they could not turn away from. It's as if the singer is being called to a place that is not quite of this world.

The repetition of the line "Something in the darkness pulled me deeper, something in the madness eased my mind" speaks to the idea that the darkness and mystery can be both alluring and comforting at the same time. It's as if the singer is being called to a place where they can cut the strings that bind them to mankind and experience something otherworldly.

In the third and final verse, the singer seems to have found a place where they belong, amongst the moss and the stone, the wind and the wood. They lay themselves down upon the green and when the ivy overgrew, they could never leave. The song seems to speak of a desire to escape the mundanity of everyday life and to embrace something unknown and perhaps even supernatural.

"Free from desire,
you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire,
you see only the manifestations.
Yet, mystery and manifestations
arise from the same common source.
This source is darkness.
Darkness within darkness,
The gateway to all understanding."

Finally, a song that gets the meaning of the word darkness (my favorite word). It's not even connected to the underworld. Or that it brings sadness, or anything like that! This is the first song I've heard of Blackmore's Night and they cought me in their web. :)

Elvar Archfeld

Darkness there, and nothing more.

Darkness isn't negative, evil or creepy, it's soothing and relaxing, a moment when finally everybody is silent and peace returns to the world. When dreams begin, reality fades, wonders happen, and magic is created. Fear no darkness, as it is full of unseen beauty, as it is the realm of mystery and tranquility...

Just saw them perform this live in Washington, DC. It was even better than recorded version. One of my favorites by my new favorite group.
