health to the company
Blackmore's Night Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never meet here again

So here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never meet here again

Our ship lies at harbour she's ready to dock
I wish her safe landing without any shock
And if we should meet again by land or by sea
I will always remember your kindness to me

So here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never meet here again

My footsteps may falter my wit it may fail
My course may be challenged by November gale
Ere fortune shall prove to be friend or be foe
You will always be with me wherever I go

So here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass

Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never meet here again

Overall Meaning

"Health To The Company" by Blackmore's Night is a traditional Irish toast, where everyone present lifts a glass and drinks to a "health" or "good fortune" of the group. The lyrics speak of the importance of gathering together and having a good time while it lasts because it's uncertain whether they'll ever meet again.

The first stanza sets the tone for the rest of the song. It invites the listeners to join in the singing and to "drink and be merry all grief to refrain." The second stanza explicitly acknowledges the uncertainty of future meetings and toasts to the group's health and the singer's lover's health.

The third stanza speaks of a ship that is about to dock, and the singer wishes the crew a safe landing. Whether they meet again or not, the singer promises to remember the kindness showed to him by the group.

The final stanza alludes to the uncertainties in life and promises that the singer won't forget the people closest to him, wherever his path takes him. The song's overall message is one of unity, camaraderie, and the fleetingness of life, and the need to cherish the moments we have with those around us.

Personally, I like this song because it relaxes me. Come to think of it, the majority of Blackmore's Night's music relaxes me. I won't pay any mind to the haters. Come the holiday season, I hope to get this CD for either my birthday or Christmas

so much truth to this song its ridiculous. :) Amazing Blackmore's night. U know I'm glad they aren't a mainstream band or it would put pressure on them and ruin their fun which makes their craft so beautiful :)

This is an old Pub drinking song I've heard around the Renn's. They've really smoothed it out.

Is maybe the more irish one in their albums. It's because of the melody and the tone. Good one :D

Good song. Best sung on the last night of SCA outings, around a fire with horns being passed....
