The son of Albion, Fairport and Steeleye founder Ashley Hutchings and singer Judy Dunlop, Dunlop began playing guitar at the age of six and grew up around the music of The Albion Band “I remember going to a lot of Albion Band gigs and falling in love with the music, Ken Nicol’s guitar playing has stayed with me in particular and inspired me to learn and play music I really connected with.”
Dunlop began his career in entertainment in the film industry, in Tim Burton’s production of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, playing the part of young Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp).
He started a career in music with his first EP being released in the summer of 2010 and the follow up Bags Outside the Door - EP a year later. Dunlop completed a short tour of Italy and performed at the Southbank Centre at the ‘In Search of Nic Jones’ tribute concert. He has supported acts such as Fairport Convention, Cara Dillon and Georgie Fame and was a finalist of the 2012 Radio 2 Young Folk Award.
Dunlop took over the running of The Albion Band from Hutchings in 2011 but folded the band in 2013 to focus on his solo career.

Of my true love's hair
Her lips are like
A rose so fair
She's got the sweetest smile
And the gentlest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands
I love my love
I love the ground
Whereon he goes
And how I wish
The day would come
When he and I
Can be as one
So I moved to??
Cause satisfied
I'll never be
Oh, I'll write her letters
Just a few short lines?
Ten thousand times
Cause black is the colour
Of my true love's hair
Her lips are like
A rose so fair
She's got the sweetest smile
And the gentlest hands
And I love the ground whereon she stands
In Blair Dunlop's rendition of "Black Is the Colour," the lyrics speak of a fierce love and longing for someone who is described as having dark hair and lips like a fair rose. The singer, who appears to be male, expresses a deep affection for this person, admiring her sweet smile and gentle hands. The chorus repeats the phrase "And I love the ground whereon she stands," emphasizing the unending devotion felt towards the beloved.
The second verse shows the singer expressing a desire to be near the person they love, but ultimately realizing that they cannot be satisfied without them. The image of writing letters ten thousand times shows a desperation to keep in touch and remind the person of the singer's undying love, despite being physically apart.
Overall, the lyrics convey a message of intense, passionate love that transcends physical distance and serves as a source of strength and motivation for the singer. The use of color imagery throughout the lyrics paints a vivid picture of the singer's love and admiration for their significant other.
