Nocturne
Blanco White Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold light of the stars descent
A flag drew a line in the wind
If I was awake there's a world that I left
Never far behind from the time that I spent on the arctic ice

One moon has a name
Only one to a dreaming host
but in the night she's ashamed
Till her drop through a darkened sea below
Beyond the world
How deep does the water go

Cold trail of the last ascent
A cross held a sign in the wind
And time fell away with the sound of each step
If the stars aligned then for us they were meant
In the lunar sky

That moon has a name
In the fires of a silver coast
And on the ice I'm afraid
Of the drop through a darkened sea below

Beyond the world
How deep does the water go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Blanco White's song "Nocturne" paint a haunting yet beautiful picture of a journey through a cold and desolate place. The opening line, "Cold light of the stars descent," sets the scene for a journey under the night sky, with the stars providing the only light in this dark and lonely place. The second line, "A flag drew a line in the wind," suggests the idea of boundaries, perhaps the line separating what is safe and known from the unknown and dangerous.

The singer reflects upon the world that they have left behind, one that they are never far from, as they make their way across the arctic ice. The line, "If I was awake there's a world that I left," hints that perhaps the journey is one of the mind, as if the singer is dreaming and exploring their subconscious. The imagery of the "arctic ice" adds to the feeling of isolation and danger, as the cold and unforgiving landscape stretches out before them.

The lyrics then turn to the moon, which has a name for the dreaming host, but in the darkness of night, it is ashamed until it drops through the darkened sea below. The unknown depth of the sea represents the unknown depths of the mind, and the fears and uncertainties that lie beneath the surface.

The second half of the song continues the journey, with the singer reflecting on the cross that held a sign in the wind, perhaps another marker of boundaries and dangers. The "lunar sky" suggests that the journey has taken us to the moon, where the singer is afraid of falling through the darkened sea below. The final line once again asks, "How deep does the water go?", leaving us with a sense of mystery and uncertainty.

Overall, Blanco White's "Nocturne" is a beautiful and haunting exploration of the subconscious, set against a backdrop of cold and unforgiving landscapes.

Cold light of the stars the same
A flag drew a line in the wind
If I was awake there's a world that I left
Never far behind
From the time that I spent on the Arctic ice
One moon has a name
Only one to a dream evolved
And in the night she's ashamed
Tell her drive through a darkened sea
Below, beyond the world
How deep does the water go?
Cold trail of the last descent
Across held a sign in the wind
And time fell away
With the sound of each step
If the stars align then
For us they were meant in the lunar sky
That moon has a name
In the fires of a silver corpse
And on the ice I'm afraid
Of the drop through a darkened sea
Below, beyond the world
How deep does the water go?

Lyrics :

Cold light of the stars the same
A flag drew a whine in the wind
If I was awake there's a world that I left
Never far behind
From the time that I spent on the Arctic ice
One moon has a name
Only one to a dream
But in the night she's ashamed
Till her drive to the darken sea below beyond the way
How deep does the water go?

Cold trail of the last descent
Across held a sign in the wind
And time fell away
With the sound of each step
If the stars align then
For us they were meant in the lunar sky

That moon has a name
In the fires of a silver corpse
And only I seem afraid
Of a drop through a dark
And see below beyond the world
How deep does the water go?

Cold light of the stars’ descent

Till her drop through a darkened sea below
Beyond the world
How deep does the water go?
