You Gonna Quit Me Blues
Blind Blake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You gonna quit me, baby, good as I been to you
Good as I been to you, Lord, Lord,
Good as I been to you

Give you my money, honey, buy your shoes and clothes, Lord, Lord
Buy your shoes and clothes, Lord, Lord
Buy your shoes and clothes
You're gonna quit me baby, put me out of doors
Put me out of doors, Lord, Lord
Put me out of doors

Six months on the chain gang, b'lieve me ain't no fun
B'lieve me ain't no fun, Lord, Lord
B'lieve me ain't no fun

Day you quit me, baby, that's the day you die, Lord, Lord
That's the day you die, Lord, Lord
That's the day you die

Jail house ain't no plaything, b'lieve me, 'tain't no lie
B'lieve me, 'tain't no lie, Lord, Lord
B'lieve me, 'tain't no lie

Day you quit me, baby, that's the day you die, Lord, Lord

That's the day you die, Lord, Lord
That's the day you die

Overall Meaning

In Blind Blake's song "You Gonna Quit Me Blues," the lyrics tell a story of a man being left by his lover. He pleads with her to stay, reminding her of all the good things he's done for her, like giving her money to buy clothes and shoes. The man is worried about the consequences of being left behind, telling her she'll "put [him] out of doors" and that he may end up on a chain gang. He warns his lover that the day she leaves him will be the day she dies, possibly implying that he would take it so hard that he would die of a broken heart, or that he would seek revenge.

The lyrics of "You Gonna Quit Me Blues" paint a picture of a man who has invested a lot in his relationship and is now fearing the worst. He tries to convince his lover to stay with him, reminding her of all the good he has done for her, but at the same time, he threatens her with dire consequences if she leaves. The repetition of the phrase "Lord, Lord" throughout the lyrics adds to the feeling of desperation in the man's plea.
