Best remembered for their 1993 single "No Rain", the group enjoyed critical and commercial success in the early 1990s with their neo-psychedelic take on alternative rock. The 1995 death of lead vocalist Shannon Hoon halted the band's activity, and the members went on hiatus until officially disbanding in 1999. The band reformed with new lead vocalist Travis Warren in 2006, and although Warren departed two years later, he has since resumed performing with the band.
Mother
Blind Melon Lyrics

and the seas have dried.
Your honest ways have turned to lies.
Your hands of promise
turned to hands of pain.
You take for granted the life that God create
The life that God created.
The frost and flowers
the muffled whispers bleeding true.
And it doesn't matter how
what kind of eyes your looking through.
Do you see our Mother's dying?
Here's a picture for you.
I wanna paint this picture for you!
With every black choking for breath
and every inch closer to death.
Her hands are held out for you.
(solo)
You said the reasons
we're in the cities that we all made
was that we rage our poor Mother.
Poor Mother.
Poor Mother.
Now that she's leaving
and she's thrown off all that she gave,
we dig the grave
of our poor Mother!
The grass ain't growing
in my front yard, no.
Poor Mother.
Poor Mother.
Poor Mother.
"
The lyrics of Blind Melon's song "Mother" illustrate the state of the environment caused by human actions. The first verse talks about how our actions have impacted the skies and seas and how honest ways have turned to lies. The hands that once held promise have turned to hands of pain, and we have taken for granted the life that God has created. The second verse talks about how the earth provides us with the frost and flowers, but we're not paying attention to the signs that our mother is dying. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the destruction caused by our actions and how we have forgotten about the environment that sustains us.
The chorus of the song talks about our poor mother and how she is choking for breath, inching closer to death, and her hands are held out for us. It talks about how we have created cities that rage against our mother, but now that she's leaving and thrown off all that she gave, we are digging the grave of our poor mother. The lyrics of this song illustrate the collective guilt of humanity for the damage we have caused to the environment.

I was a teen when I fell in love with this band, and that love has never wavered, even in my forties. This song whispers to me as I rocked my children to sleep. And as I sang them songs of change and soul one and tones of home, I hope and pray that they feel the magic of this band and these songs forever.

Joe Peters I read in A Devil On One Shoulder and an Angel on Another that the members of the band didn’t think the song represented the band and what they stood for when putting out their debut album, they didn’t want to be known “only as” or “mostly as” Tree Huggers/Hippies (for a lack of a better word or term, I forget exactly how they put it, it’s also why Soul One was left off the debut album, they thought Soul One sounded too ‘80’s Hair Metal/Love song) singing about Mother Earth etc.
