Best remembered for their 1993 single "No Rain", the group enjoyed critical and commercial success in the early 1990s with their neo-psychedelic take on alternative rock. The 1995 death of lead vocalist Shannon Hoon halted the band's activity, and the members went on hiatus until officially disbanding in 1999. The band reformed with new lead vocalist Travis Warren in 2006, and although Warren departed two years later, he has since resumed performing with the band.

Your soul's a bowl of jokes
And everyday you remind me
How I'm desperately in need
See, I got a lot of fiends around
And they're peaking through nothing new
They see you
See everything on the inside, out
Oh, please give me a little more
And I'll push away those baby blues
Cause one of these days this will die
So will me and so will you
I write a letter to a friend of mine
I tell him how much I used to love watch him smile
See I haven't seen him smile in a little while
Haven't seen him smile in a little while
But, I know you're laughing from the inside out
Laughin' from the inside out
I know you're laughing from the inside out
Laughing from the inside
From the inside
From the inside
From the inside
From the inside out
"Mouthful of Cavities" is a song by Blind Melon that talks about the need for human connection, even if it's with people who have faults. The first verse of the song is quite straightforward, describing how the singer's "fiends" are seemingly always around, watching everything he/she does. They're not surprised by the troubles he/she gets into since they're always there looking for something new to satisfy their insatiable curiosities.
The chorus switches the focus from the fiends to the singer, who is desperately searching for some kind of salvation from the pain of isolation. He/she wants someone to give him more, something to make him/her happy, but he/she knows that it won't last. At the end of the day, they will die, and nothing will change that. In the second verse, the singer writes a letter to a friend, confessing how they miss seeing them smile. The verse speaks to the theme of loss and the longing for human connections that were once meaningful.
The last verse repeats the chorus, where the singer seems to understand that despite everything, this person is happy on the inside, and that's what really matters. It's a beautiful song that speaks to the human nature of needing others to help us endure the challenges of life.
