Shut Up
Blink182° Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shut the fuck up she said
I'm going fucking deaf
You're always too loud
Everything's too loud

Now that all my friends left
This place is fucking dead
I want to move out
When can we move out
This shit has got to stop
I'll run away

Get the fuck up she said
Your life is meaningless
It's going nowhere
You're going nowhere

You're just a fuck up she said
I'll live alone instead
She said "you don't care"
I know I don't care

I'll never ask permission from you
Fuck off I'm not listening to you
I'm not coming home
I'm never going to come back home

I got too fucked up again
And passed out on the plane
Tried to forget you
I can't forget you

No sleep on this flight
I'll think about the nights
We had to get through
How did we get through?

I'll never ask permission from you
Fuck off I'm not listening to you
I'm not coming home
I'm never going to come back home
I'll run away

I think it's time that I should leave
I think it's time that I should leave
I think it's time that I should leave
I think it's time that I should leave

I'll never ask permission from you
Fuck off I'm not listening to you
I'm not coming home
I'm never going to come back home
I'll run away

I think it's time for me to leave (I'll run away)
I think it's time for me to leave (I'll run away)

I think it's time for me to leave (I'll run away)
I think it's time for me to leave (I'll run away)

Overall Meaning

Blink182°'s song Shut Up is a powerful song that evokes feelings of frustration, anger, and desperation. The song's lyrics tell the story of a person who has reached a breaking point in their life - they feel trapped, suffocated, and unable to escape their current situation. The opening lines of the song, "Shut the fuck up she said / I'm going fucking deaf / You're always too loud / Everything's too loud," show us the singer's frustration with their partner or roommate. They feel like their voice is not being heard, and every sound around them is just making things worse.

As the song progresses, we see that the singer has lost all hope in their life. They feel like they are going nowhere, and their life is meaningless. They contemplate leaving their current situation and starting anew, "I'll never ask permission from you / Fuck off I'm not listening to you / I'm not coming home / I'm never going to come back home / I'll run away." The repetition of the phrase "I'll run away" shows us that the singer is serious about leaving and starting afresh.

Overall, the song Shut Up is a powerful anthem for anyone who has ever felt trapped or suffocated in their life. The lyrics are raw and honest, and the music is intense and powerful.

When my daughter hits her teens I will hand her this album, because parents forget how difficult those years are. Just know that the teenage years are a plague; and once you make it through those, life gets a whole lot better.

Still the best song on the album. Still my favorite album after self titled

This was the first album I ever bought (with my dad's money!) Blink's earlier stuff (as in this album and those before it) just perfectly sum up how I felt as a teenager. There was so much serious stuff about how angry we should all be at the world, but mostly I was just confused and mildly annoyed. I didn't want to rebel I just wanted to have fun and I couldn't understand why that couldn't happen all the time. With Blink you didn't have to hate your parents or be politically aware to feel them. It was just fun and made you feel like it was ok to not know what the hell was going on from on minute to the next.
