Progressively they moved to a more rock-orientated style to accomodate the venues they played in Sydney. A big part of the Bliss' sound was sequenced beats, breaks, loops and samples, with live drums, bass, guitar and keyboards on top, inspired by Jesus Jones and Pop Will Eat Itself.

14. Grunge may not have yet become a universal language, but it's translated credibly enough for Montreal's Bliss (Colin Burnett, David Bryant, Michael Stevenson, Sylvain Bouthilliette), whose "Grafted to an Elbow" (1993) is 11 tracks of grinding post-melodic post-punk. Produced by Chicago rancor-rock godfather Steve Albini, "Grafted to an Elbow" is oblique yet vehement, its unease with contemporary society conveyed more by TV- damaged titles like "Nature's Gentle Regulator" than by the cryptic, fragmentary lyrics spit out by David Bryant (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fires To Flames).

But that Thy Blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidds't me come to Thee
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
Just as I am, though toss'd about
Fightings and fears within, without
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind
Sight, riches, healing of the mind
Yea all I need, in Thee to find
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve
Because Thy promise I believe
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
Just as I am Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down
Now to be Thine, yea Thine alone
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
Just as I am, of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove
Here for a season, then above
O Lamb of God, I come
Just as I am, just as I am
Just as I am, I come
The lyrics to "I Am" by Bliss are a powerful reflection of the human condition and our relationship with God. The first stanza begins with the singer acknowledging that they come "just as [they] am," with no qualifications or defenses. The singer recognizes their imperfections and faults but finds solace in the fact that Christ's blood was shed for them. This line highlights the sacrifice of Christ, who died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. The singer finds comfort in this sacrifice, and it is this sacrifice that allows them to come to God.
The second stanza delves deeper into the singer's struggles with doubt and fear. The singer describes being "toss'd about" by conflict within and without, yet still finding the strength to come to God. This line speaks directly to our human experience - life can be difficult and we will face challenges, but we can find peace and comfort in God. The singer acknowledges that their struggles may not disappear, but they still come to God just as they are.
The third stanza reflects on our spiritual poverty and our need for God's grace. The singer describes themselves as "poor, wretched, blind," recognizing that they need Christ's love and mercy to heal their souls. This line emphasizes the idea that we are all flawed and imperfect, but we can find salvation through Christ.
The fourth stanza speaks to the promises of God. The singer believes that Christ will "receive" and "welcome" them, offering "pardon, cleanse, relieve." This line reflects the grace and mercy of God - no matter our past mistakes or flaws, we can find forgiveness and acceptance through Christ.
The fifth stanza is a reflection on the transformative power of love. The singer recognizes that the love of God has "broken every barrier down." This line emphasizes the idea that God's love can transform us, regardless of our past, and bring us closer to Him.
Finally, the sixth stanza looks ahead to the future. The singer acknowledges that their time on earth is limited and that they are just here "for a season." But, they find comfort in knowing they will be with God above.
Overall, "I Am" is a song of worship and praise, reflecting on the relationship between humanity and God. It emphasizes the transformative power of Christ's love and the unconditional grace and mercy of God.
