Wild Mountain Nation
Blitzen Trapper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come out from the world
and into my arms
like wind on the water with me
come out from the city
come out from the town
build stone by stone a wild mountain home

When the red moon wains
we'll be moving on the plains
through the tall grass out to the sea
and we'll cross that water
my wild mountain lover
like wolves running silent and free

(chorus)
So if your love won't grow
and the rivers won't flow
just join that holy desert tribe
is where we saddle up to ride
you know that wild mountain nation
on the rise of going home

Come out from the world
and into my arms
like wind on the water with me
with wings like the angels
and hearts like the sun
building stone by stone
a wild mountain home

(repeat chorus 2x)

Overall Meaning

The song "Wild Mountain Nation" by Blitzen Trapper is a poetic and dreamy call to escape from a world that has lost its magic, and to build a new life with the one you love in a wild and untamed place. The lyrics are full of natural and romantic imagery, inviting the listener to leave the city and the town, and to embrace a life of freedom and adventure. The singer sings to his lover, asking them to join him in creating a "wild mountain home" stone by stone. The idea of living close to nature, with the wind on their skin and the water at their feet, is a powerful symbol of a life lived on one's own terms, unencumbered by the pressures and stresses of modern society.

The chorus repeated throughout the song emphasizes the immediacy and urgency of the call to break away from the artificial world of the city and join the "holy desert tribe" of those seeking a more authentic life. The metaphor of the desert, traditionally associated with solitude and isolation, is turned on its head here, as the singer sees it as a place of community and shared purpose. The final lines of the song, "you know that wild mountain nation/on the rise of going home," bring the focus back to the core message of the song: that by rejecting the empty promises of urban living and seeking a connection to the natural world, we can find our way home to ourselves.

This is an absolutely incredible song from a great band. I know everybody loves to call artists underrated, but it’s insane how few people appreciate this song and this record. I know a few blitzen trapper albums make some critics’ “best of the year” lists but I never hear ANYBODY talk about them. Sometimes I’ll see Furr on a folk playlist but that’s it. One of the best alt country bands out there right now.
