Little Thoughts
Bloc Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been thinking little thoughts
Keep on walking try to stay up
Pay Attention to the details
We go slowly, slowly down
Been thinking little thoughts
Keep on walking try to stay up
Pay Attention to the details
We go slowly, down

I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll Go back, B, B, B, backwards

This world ain't just m, m, m, made of facts
Every half hour is a countdown
If it's 'cause of my age then you're a coward
If it's 'cause of my age then you're a coward
If it's 'cause of my age then you're a coward
I haven't got the guts to stand alone

I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll Go back, B, B, B, backwards

I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me
I'll go back if you ask
I'll go back if you ask me

I'll go back if you ask me
I'LL go back B, B, B, backwards!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bloc Party's song Little Thoughts are reflective of the anxiety that is often associated with growing up and transitioning into adulthood. The phrase "thinking little thoughts" is a metaphor for overthinking and excessively worrying about small things, while "paying attention to the details" is indicative of the tendency to nitpick and analyze every aspect of life. The repetition of the line "we go slowly, slowly down" suggests a sense of dread and ennui that reflects the disillusionment that comes with aging.

The second verse seems to be directed at someone who is questioning the singer's choices or ability to handle the pressures of life. The line "this world ain't just made of facts" is a reminder that there are intangible elements to life such as emotions and feelings that cannot be quantified. The reference to every half hour being a countdown is likely a metaphor for the finite nature of time and the feeling of being pressured into accomplishing things on a certain timeline. The refrain "I'll go back if you ask me" is a plea for reassurance and support from someone who the singer trusts.

The repeated use of the phrase "B, B, B, backwards" at the end of the song could be interpreted as a call to turn back time and undo the mistakes of the past. The repetition of this phrase also emphasizes the cyclical nature of life and the tendency to repeat mistakes.

You know what's weird. On the U.S. release of the Silent Alarm CD that I bought in 2005 when it was still new, this song is on it. It quickly became my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs of the era, just an absolute anthem. I only just found out the other day that it's not on the UK version of the album! And that it's not even available to stream now! Utter insanity! The album absolutely feels incomplete without it. Just really feel for the newer fans who don't know this song and don't know what it does to elevate that album.
