Song For Clay Disappear Here Album Version
Bloc Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am trying to be heroic in an age of modernity
I am trying to be heroic, because all around me history sings

So I enjoyed and I devoured flesh and wine and luxury
But in my heart I am lukewarm nothing ever really touches me

At Les Trois Garçons
We meet at precisely
9 o'clock.
I order the foie gras and I eat it with complete disdain

Bubbles rise in champagne flutes,
But when we kiss I feel nothing

Feasting on sleeping pills and Marlboro Reds
(So busy, won't save you)
Oho, How our, how our parents they suffered for nothing
Live the dream, live the dream, live the dream
Like the 80's never happened
People are afraid, are afraid
To merge on the freeway
Disappear here

Stroll the pier
Into the magazine launch party
I am handed a pill, and I swallow with complete disdain
Kick-drum bangs off the high-hat; remembered to look bored
We suck each others' faces and make sure we are noticed
(Cocaine won't save you)
Because East London is a vampire
It sucks the joy right out of me
How we look for corruption in these golden years

Oho, How our, how our parents they suffered for nothing
Live the dream, live the dream, live the dream
Like the 80's never happened
People are afraid, are afraid
To merge on the freeway
Disappear here.
Disappear here.
Disappear here.

Disappear here.
Disappear here.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bloc Party's Song for Clay are about an individual's struggle to feel something genuine in a world filled with materialistic values and superficiality. The persona is trying to be heroic in a modern age, but all around him history only sings. He has indulged in flesh, wine and luxury, but his heart remains lukewarm, never really touched by anything. At Les Trois Garçons, he meets someone, but even their love-making leaves him feeling nothing. He turns to excessive drug use and cigarettes, but they only offer fleeting pleasure. He attends magazine launch parties, taking pills and kissing strangers, but again, nothing seems to satisfy him. The song ultimately touches on themes of disillusionment, disconnection, and apathy in contemporary society.

The song's title references the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose middle name was "Michel Basquiat aka 'SAMO'," which stands for "Same Old Shit." The initials "S.A.M.O." appear several times in the song, and are also seen as graffiti art in the bridge of the music video.

The Les Trois Garçons reference is to a restaurant in Shoreditch, East London, which was a popular haunt for many artists and celebrities in the early 2000s, including members of Bloc Party.

The song's video features a print of the painting "The Death of Marat" by Jean-Paul Marat. The figure in the painting was a leader during the French Revolution who was assassinated in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday.

The song has been interpreted as a criticism of the art world and its commodification of creativity, with lyrics like "Feasting on sleeping pills and Marlboro Reds / So busy, won't save you."

The "Kick-drum bangs off the high-hat" line in the song is a nod to Bloc Party's signature post-punk sound, which is characterized by its driving drum and guitar rhythms.

The line "Like the 80's never happened" has been interpreted as a reference to the fact that the song was released in the early 2000s, a time when many musical genres from the 80s were being revived and reimagined.

The song's dissonant melody and irregular song structure have been noted by critics as a departure from the more conventional indie rock sound of Bloc Party's earlier work.

The song's opening lines ("I am trying to be heroic in an age of modernity / I am trying to be heroic, because all around me history sings") were referenced by author Zadie Smith in her novel "NW," in which they are spoken by a character named Leah Hanwell.

The song has been covered by several artists, including Kelly Clarkson and Sharon Van Etten.

Chords (capo on 2nd fret):
Verse: Am, C, G, F (x2)
Chorus: D, Am, C, G

The 00's was like a 60's revival in all the great music that was produced.

Ehh I think the 90s were far more expansive. The 2000s had a lot of gems dont get me wrong, but there was way more empty shit coming out because of media consolidation. There are only 6 mainstream corporations now because of the telecommunications act of 96, so they dont go out and search for "new sounds" becUse they are all pn top and no longer need to compete really. In capitalism, monopolies are the biggest culprit in destroying culture because when a corporation gets that big instead od going around to find legitimate underground culture, they pretend all the need to do is "make up" culture, which isnt possible for corporations. There will always be great underground muaic and movements, but its getting harder to find out about some because the mainstream no longer gives any of them a platform, you have to actively search out underground music now yourself. Its always "been that way", but not to this degree because at least back in the day the mainstream hired artists that used to be a part of the underground. They dont anymore.
