Storm & Stress
Bloc Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Promise you'll say if it gets
Promise you'll say if it gets too much
Don't be so scared of corners
Don't be so tired of this life

You drink to laugh
You drink to cry
You wear me in
You wear me

You really suffer for it
You really suffer for your art
Don't be a martyr for it
Don't be a martyr for the cause
Your eyes tell it
Your eyes tell the truth

You drink to laugh
You drink to cry
You wear me in
You wear me

You're not always
You're not always right
A new fight for a last right
A new fight for a last right
You can fight a new fight
You can fight it's alright

You're the life of the party
You make my world spin around
The first time is the next time
This time is the last time
And this time is the last time
'cause this time I will fight

You're not always right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bloc Party's song Storm and Stress depict a relationship between two individuals where one person is struggling with their art and the toll it takes on them, while the other person is trying to support them through their struggles. The first part of the song starts with a plea from the struggling artist, asking their partner to promise to let them know if things become too overwhelming. The next lines encourage the person not to be so scared of new experiences and not to be tired of life, indicating that the artist is perhaps feeling stuck and stagnant in their creativity.

The lyrics then transition into a description of the artist's coping mechanisms, in this case, drinking. They acknowledge that they drink to both laugh and cry, and that their partner provides them with a sense of comfort and familiarity when they wear them in. However, the artist also recognizes the toll their art takes on them, saying that they "really suffer for it" and cautioning their partner not to become a martyr for their artistic cause.

The chorus repeats the lines about drinking and wearing their partner in, emphasizing the extent to which they rely on them for support. The latter half of the song then shifts towards a more determined tone, with the artist asserting that they are not always right and acknowledging that they must fight for their art. They describe their partner as the life of the party and someone who makes their world spin around, but ultimately resolve to fight for themselves rather than relying on their partner's support alone.

I can confidently say that I'm a big fan of Bloc Party, and every time I find myself in difficulty or trouble, I listen to this song, which makes me feel better. Whenever I listen to the verse of ' You can fight a new fight', I feel kind of energised.

I'm the biggest of Bloc Party fans, and I adore every album, but back before Silent Alarm seems to me when they really had something. I think the lack of interference from studio production lends itself to the raw and incredible sound of these early b-sides and rarities. I would give anything to have been going to their early gigs when they used to play this stuff.

@EMMmaximino

I love this song it makes me feel better about the redundancy of past relationships
