This Is Not a Competition
Bloc Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is not a competition
You will see when I am gone
Can't you see that I am trying?
Love fifteen; fifteen all

I made a vow to carry you home
If you fall sick, if you pass out
I made a vow to rescue you
If you're in trouble, if you flake out

If you need to ask
I ache because you ache

What was it you could not tell me?
Why are there cuts on your arm?

What is it you run away from?
Why have all the clocks stopped?

Overall Meaning

The song "This Is Not a Competition" by Bloc Party explores the tensions that exist within a relationship, with the singer expressing his commitment to supporting his partner even in difficult circumstances. The opening line, "This is not a competition," hints at a possible struggle for power within the relationship, with the singer attempting to assert that the two should not be adversarial towards each other. He urges his partner to recognize his efforts, saying that "You will see when I am gone," implying that his contributions will become apparent after he is no longer there.

The second verse reinforces this commitment, with the singer detailing his plans to care for his partner if she falls ill or behaves irresponsibly. However, despite his efforts, there still seems to be a barrier between them, with the singer asking probing questions that suggest he is struggling to understand her feelings and behaviors. He acknowledges his own pain, saying "I ache because you ache," but it's unclear whether his partner is receptive to his support.

The line "Love fifteen; fifteen all" is a reference to tennis scoring, and it could be interpreted as a way of measuring the back-and-forth nature of the relationship. Overall, the song reveals the singer's deep desire to connect with his partner and support her, but also highlights the challenges and difficulties that can arise within relationships.

Bloc Party could make a good album off their b sides alone

You know your a good band, when you can afford to NOT put some really good songs on the full albums! How very U2 of them (in a good way!)

I know this comment is over a decade old but the fact that you compared Bloc Party to U2 deeply disturbs me

Not sure if people know this but lyrics to “So Here We Are ”were derived from this song....

“I made a vow, to carry you home
If you fall sick, if you pass out”
