You've got Maelstrom
Blockhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[sampled audio]

Some nights it just gets worse than others.
Some nights, it just,
Gets worse.

I feel terrible.
But what can we do?

I don't know.
It's just, a feeling I've got.

Like, something's about to happen,
But I don't know what.

Overall Meaning

The sampled audio at the beginning of Blockhead's song You've Got Maelstrom creates a sense of unease and uncertainty. The voice speaks of how some nights are worse than others, and the phrase "some nights it just gets worse" is repeated a few times, highlighting the idea of a downward spiral. The singer expresses a feeling of "terrible" and also points out the ambiguity of the situation, saying "what can we do?" This creates a sense of helplessness and resignation. There is also an ominous feeling created by the line "something's about to happen, but I don't know what." This phrase introduces a sense of impending danger or crisis. The overall message of the sampled audio, then, is one of uncertainty, anxiety, and a sense of being on the brink.

The rest of the song matches this feeling, with a slow and melancholy beat, and sparse instrumentation that creates a sense of space and emptiness. The melody is haunting and somber, with a repeated note motif that gives a sense of building tension. There are some vocal samples from a woman's voice, but they are distorted and unclear, which adds to the overall sense of mystery and unease. The overall effect of the song is to create a feeling of foreboding and dread.

Overall, You've Got Maelstrom is a song that captures a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety, and a sense of impending crisis. The sampled audio at the beginning sets the tone for the rest of the song, creating a mood of unease and foreboding that is carried through by the music, instrumentation, and vocal samples.

I just found this song in Pandora. It totally describes what anxiety feels like. Like those days when for some reason the pills don't really kick in and you have the feeling that something bad is about to happen.

Not my introduction to Blockhead, I was a fan of his work with Aesop Rock. This album got me through trade school. I often popped the CD into my diskman, grabbed a set of headphones and buckled down for homework and reading.

Since, Blockhead has surpassed this body of work, one of my favorites works of his is the collaboration between he and Billy Woods, Dour Candy. Truly some banging tracks there too.

Blockhead has a very interesting style. I'm not a critic, so don't expect me to put what he does to words. But I can say, you'll instantly know Blockhead was the producer when you hear the beat.
