(Abrahams had a major falling out with Tull leader Ian Anderson.) Blodwyn Pig consisted of Abrahams (guitar and vocals), Jack Lancaster (saxophone), Andy Pyle (bass guitar), and Ron Berg (drums).

The band recorded two albums: Ahead Rings Out (1969) and Getting to This (1970). Both reached the lower half of the British top ten. On the first album they played a heavy blues-rock rooted in the British 1960s R'n'B scene from which sprang groups like the Yardbirds, Free, and eventually Led Zeppelin, but Blodwyn Pig had a different twist on the genre thanks to Lancaster's sax being so prominent in the mix, which led them to more creative sixties underground jazz-influenced music on the second. The single "Summer Day" from Ahead Rings Out failed to chart.

the slide guitar in this song has stuck in my head for over 50 years. I also agree fully. Living in London at the time, I followed them from the start because I believed Mick Abrahams was among the factors that made Tull's debut This Was especially good, and having seen Tull at the Marquee in '68, Mick was clearly one of the best UK blues-rock guitarists of that time. The two Blodwyn albums -- highlighted by the marvelous Jack Lancaster -- really hit the mark.

This reminds me of John Mayall and that’s a good thing. Listen to the whole band on this. Mick sounds great on vocals as well. One of my favourite blues songs from the 60s.

Saw Mick Abrahms with Jethro Tull and then again with Bloodwyn Pig back at the Fillmore East a long time ago. Bloodwyn Pig never made it like Tull, but they were great. I'm not much of a horns guy, but this is really good stuff.

same here. Tull was the opening act at the Fillmore with Ian Andersen, Mick Abrahms, Clive Bunker and Glen Cornish. a bit later in time Chicken Shack (Stan Webb;s band with Christine Perfect) opened for Blodwyn Pig.

Same here! Both at the Fillmore. But I’m pretty sure the Tull show I saw there was with Martin Barre. Sometimes I used to get Tull and Blodwyn music mixed up when listening on my tape deck, and only recently realized it was likely because of Abrahms. Better late than never. 😁

Blodwyn Pig was formed by guitarist Mick Abrahams in 1969, after he left Jethro Tull. Drummer Ron Berg, bassist Andy Pyle, and sax and flute prodigy Jack Lancaster completed the group. Blodwyn Pig's progressive sound mirrored early Jethro Tull material, blending jazz and blues with a new, signature flute aftertaste. Lancaster's sax and woodwinds played a huge role in Pig's eccentric delight. The group released two albums, Ahead Rings Out and Getting to This, between 1970 and '71, but the band's original lineup broke up after Abrahams left in early '70s.

This was a Great time for music, So many talented bands, The Fillmore East and West, The Steve Paul Scene, Terry Reid, The Stones had Mick Taylor, Humble Pie was on the way, Mountain with Leslie West, Johnny Winter, Ten Years After, John Mayall, The Band, Jimi Hendrix, Etc. Etc. These guys were the innovators, The Creators of what a Band should look and sound like, The Further away it got from this Original Formula the more it sucked. It really bottomed out when the great uninformed would support some thing Like Kiss, Shit song writing covered up with Moronic costumes and ass holes breathing fire. If you cant cut it with just your music get out of an industry you really don't belong in.

What a great sound. Mick Abrahams is such a great musician. His blues roots were the perfect counterbalance to Ian Anderson in Jethro Tull - it kept Anderson's artsy-fartsy tendencies in check.

My feelings exactly. That first album with Anderson, Abrahams, Clive Bunker, and Glenn Cornick was a masterpiece. It, like most simple blues/jazz/rock music, has soul, feel, groove. Just when Tull was brilliantly blending all three forms, Anderson gets antsy and ruins it!

I forgot about Blodwyn Pig but I did see an entire night of blues at the Grande once. The opening act was a band that might have been called something like Red Hot and Low Down.

I'm not certain who the second band was but it was one of the blues bands out of Chicago.

he paved the way to how guitar was played for Tull without even realizing, and This Was was the only Tull album that sounds like two people were in charge... almost like a supergroup (which of course it wasn't then since both he and Ian were brand new, but now listening to This Was, it IS a supergroup)

best song on the album, no surprise it made a mainstream movie's playlist, Almost Famous... this band's two albums are great, very different... this song doesn't really sound like a majority of their really jazzy tunes: it's like game show music that you hear and realize that the musicians are stoned...

As good as In My Own Dream, the Paul Butterfield Band album that came out during the same era. Bass is phenomenal and the horns gritty and sweet at the same time. Who knows what the connection to Jethro Tull is? Interesting stuff, not your usual blues in a bottle.

Who knows Donald M. Maybe I sat right behind you at the B P concert, or in front, don't remember where now, Either way there was no place like the Fillmore East, And that's no Idle old Guys boast, Bill Gram knew shit from shineola. He hired the best bands of the time to play there. for 3.50 you could watch a night of John Mayall, Buddy guy and Johnny Winter. He also had bands like Cold Blood, and Loading Zone who were the weaker West coast bands but were still good. But they were mostly openers for the Main acts. Then he would turn around and Put in Jefferson Airplane, And the Dead just about lived there. I went with about 8 people we all got to the box office early and hogged the front row for John Mayall's Turning Point Album, Which I'm sure was recorded there that night. Blodwyn Pig was a supreme band that for some unknown reason never made it as big as they should have. The music was great. Mick Abrahams is still carrying on in England Making Albums and Playing out, And as it is supposed to be his playing has gotten better and better.

Of course it was. Ex-Tull member Mick Abrahms was in the band. Tull were moving more into prog, where Abrahms wanted to keep doing blues and add slide. This sounds a bit like they did on This Was. Abrahms would later reunite the players on This Was except for Anderson to perform a lot of the early Tull tunes. The band was called.....wait for it.......This Was.
