(Abrahams had a major falling out with Tull leader Ian Anderson.) Blodwyn Pig consisted of Abrahams (guitar and vocals), Jack Lancaster (saxophone), Andy Pyle (bass guitar), and Ron Berg (drums).

The band recorded two albums: Ahead Rings Out (1969) and Getting to This (1970). Both reached the lower half of the British top ten. On the first album they played a heavy blues-rock rooted in the British 1960s R'n'B scene from which sprang groups like the Yardbirds, Free, and eventually Led Zeppelin, but Blodwyn Pig had a different twist on the genre thanks to Lancaster's sax being so prominent in the mix, which led them to more creative sixties underground jazz-influenced music on the second. The single "Summer Day" from Ahead Rings Out failed to chart.

I saw Blodwyn Pig at their height at a small club in north London, I recall that it was a great gig, but they didn't play this. I was right at the front and yelled for them to play this, but Mick yelled back "we don't do that any more." I saw Mick again, some 30 years later, at a squash club in the Cotswolds, doing a solo act. Still great on guitar.

This is the first time I ever heard of this band, and the first song I've ever heard by them, but I would classify it as more of a jazz band than a rock band. I love jazz.

Jack Lancaster (Sax) recorded in the 1970s together with Robin Lumley (keyboardist of Brand X) a rock version (!) of "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergej Prokofiev and instead the traditional classic instruments they interpreted a classical piece on rock instruments with following musicians as their guests:
Gary Moore, Percy Jones (bass player of Brand X), Cozy Powell, Phil Collins, John Hiseman, Bill Brufod (playing with their drums the Hunters!), Gary Brooker, Stephane Grappelli, John Goodsall, Eno (make the sound of the wolf with his synth), Alvin Lee and some other musicians (too much to list).
btw: Most of Prokofievs animal themes were played on the trad. instruments. For example, in the original versions, the duck is represented by an oboe, but in the rock version you can hear some amazing wah-wah guitar work form Gary Moore! Likewise the original cat was a clarinet, but in the rock version by a gut string fiddle played bei Stephane Grappelli!

It's always great to see these B&W films and yt is sure the place . I'd heard them a bit and have friends that still "cultized" Bloodwyn Pig , partly for the sax work but more for Micks work I think tho . this clip is a great look at a facet of the band . The old films of Ten Years After are a real insight into British jazzmen turned rock players with that same style of bass work but far superior drumming and of course Alvins top grade playing from jazz roots which Mick lacked

I've never heard it put in that antagonistic way and thats one way of looking at it but isn't the idea of a combo to all work together ? I doubt if this band would have had any commercial success what so ever if it hadn't have been for Mick (who started it) leading it . Even with a much better drummer , tho theres a bit of rock action between bass and sax , Jack making a fine rock fusion player shows here he'd be classed as a 3rd rate leader soloist in a jazz band relegated to back up section in any jazz recording efforts . Don't kid yourself , he got away with it here as a novelty only and if you don't believe me listen to Roland Kirk (who popularized the style) to hear how a real jazz player knocks it out and also consider how far Kirk got with it even after one album .

@Michael Marino ~ Understood. I'm no drummer. I'm a guitarist/keyboard. I can carry maybe three or four fundamental beats on drums, so you would know better than I. One thing for certain, the guy wasn't an amateur, had some decent chops.

The drumming is just awful. Sounds like a rock drummer trying to play jazz, but doesn't know whether he should be in front or behind the beat. All over the place and just doesn't work.

I know. Very disapointing as Ron Berg really swung on the studio version of this song from Ahead Rings Out , their 1969 debut. It's like he can't get the feel of the song at all here.

@jonsilence I think you can still swing with a metronome if you have feel. What I hate is unmusical engineers recording real instruments played by real players and then quantising them in the digital domain. No problem with that here though :-)

@Paul McCaffrey - fendermac: I understand why clicks started being used at a certain point in pop music history, and in performance for certain pop gigs, but no first generation classic rock records from the 50s-mid 70s used them, and certainly no jazz recordings. I suspect Zep used one for "Achilles Last Stand" and you can hear why....it doesn't breathe like classic Zeppelin.

Lieber Uploader, lad doch nicht immer so viele Videos auf einmal hoch. Besser wäre es, wenn es ein Video täglich oder alle zwei Tage wäre. Das würden die Abonnenten mehr zu schätzen wissen und vor allem würde der Youtube-Algorhytmus die Videos und den Kanal häufiger anderen Usern vorschlagen.
