Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats.
The large span of time between Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery is a Butterfly is attributed to Makino's recovery time after being trampled by a horse. Much of Misery Is A Butterfly's imagery and illustration is equestrian or reflective of the accident. In the liner notes, Makino thanks her doctors "and her friends who fed her and cheered her up when she couldn't do much on her own."
The band's 7th album is called "23" and was released in April 2007.
Their 8th album, "Penny Sparkle" was released in September 14, 2010.

Maddening Cloud
Blonde Redhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If it means moving on
And you can take me back
But you must come home
We are both a in maddening cloud
And you can touch me there
Just don't leave me alone
When I dream and ask for more
You can slow and fold
And mold my mind
And she said
I can't feel my toes
And she must be alone
And far too cold
And he stares
Like he doesn't see
He must be scared
And far too lost
Under and over
We must have glanced
Face to face
We've had to dance
We're both in a maddening cloud
Sure you can step back
If it means moving on
And you take me back
But you must be alone
You can choke and smoke
And rock my mind
The opening lines of the song Maddening Cloud, by Blonde Redhead, speaks of looking back as a means of moving forward. It's a common belief that one cannot progress fully without introspection and learning from past experiences. The following line, "And you can take me back, but you must come home" suggests that this self-evaluation must have limits as one cannot dwell in the past for too long. The phrase, "we are both in a maddening cloud," implies that both individuals are in a state of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety.
The next verse speaks about intimacy, both physical and emotional. The lines "And you can touch me there, just don't leave me alone," is a plea for companionship; to be with someone physically and emotionally, and not to leave them stranded. The phrase, "And you can call me softly when I dream and ask for more," suggests that the person is there to comfort, reassure and give hope when one is at their weakest or vulnerable, reassuring their dream to be more than just a thought. The next line, "You can slow and fold and mold my mind," expresses a desire for growth and the hopes of accepting transformation.
The third verse speaks of the different states of mind of the two individuals. In the lines "And she said, I can't feel my toes and she must be alone, and far too cold," the 'she' appears to be numb, unfeeling, and isolated, suggesting a painful experience. And in the lines, "And he stares, like he doesn't see, He must be scared and far too lost," the 'he' appears to be in a state of shock or denial, not understanding the situation, and lost. The chorus is repeated at the end, suggesting that they are still in each other's lives, but their future is uncertain and volatile.
