Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats.
The large span of time between Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery is a Butterfly is attributed to Makino's recovery time after being trampled by a horse. Much of Misery Is A Butterfly's imagery and illustration is equestrian or reflective of the accident. In the liner notes, Makino thanks her doctors "and her friends who fed her and cheered her up when she couldn't do much on her own."
The band's 7th album is called "23" and was released in April 2007.
Their 8th album, "Penny Sparkle" was released in September 14, 2010.

Pink Love
Blonde Redhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But build my world besides you
Watching you draw a line
Some say you are, you are
Just like a butterfly
Whose broken wings will spread
To softly feel your mood
Over the blue sky full of you
Just like a fairytale
My only reason naturally
Starts to get to me
Pushing my way through
Mesh of life
I want to kiss the sickness of mind
My heart without reason
Sunken to deep disappointment
Spreads over universe
With a knife
I want to bleed out distress like this
It's not just a fairytale painted by me
It's not just loneliness between you and I
If on magic mountain you find you can breath
Then stay and don't look back
To the blue woven sky
Storms of petals are pouring down
Pushing their way through our pink love
So many polka dots painted by me
Spreads over universe for you
And I, I want to kiss
Pink love, pink love
I want to kiss
Pink love, pink love
In my mind
I state myself
The clock is ticking without you
Some may say illness
So called so called love
The sickness of mind
The lyrics of Blonde Redhead's song Pink Love creates a dreamy atmosphere with abstract and poetic metaphorical expressions. The song is open to interpretation, but it seems to depict a complex relationship between two people. The opening lines "I won't bind my strings to you but build my world beside you" convey the idea of independent individuals who choose to support each other. The singer stands beside their loved one, admiring them but not depending on them. The next lines, "Watching you draw a line, some say you are, you are, just like a butterfly" visualize the elegancy and beauty of their partner. The comparison to a butterfly whose wings have been broken, emphasizes the vulnerability and the tendency to rely on the other's love.
The chorus lyrics "Pink love, pink love, pink love, just like a fairytale" add a mystical touch to the song, describing how the love between the two protagonists appears magical, surreal and utopian. The verses continue with inner conflict, which explains the second protagonist's struggle with mental health, "Pushing my way through the mesh of life, I want to kiss the sickness of mind." Despite the pressing weight of the mind, the singer wants to kiss the "sickness of mind" as an act of acceptance and love.
The song concludes with "So many polka dots painted by me, spread over the universe for you, and I want to kiss pink love, pink love, I want to kiss pink love, pink love, in my mind, I state myself." The polka dots may symbolize the joy, playfulness, and child-like essence of the relationship when they are together. What is left in the singer's mind is an intense yearning for being in the relationship they once had.
