SW
Blonde Redhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not, it's not what you give but it's what you kept
It's not, it's not who you kill but it's who you left

I am I am running in my head
I am I am lying on my left
I am I am growing in my bed
I am I am ...
It's not, it's not how you speak but it's what you said
It's not, it's not what you seek but it's what you have

I am I am running in my head
I am I am lying on my left
I am I am growing in my bed
I am I am...

It's not, it's not what it seems ... It's not what it seems
It's not, it's not what you leave but it's what you hold

I am I am running in my head
I am I am lying on my left

I am I am growing in my bed
I am I am ...

Overall Meaning

Upon first listen of Blonde Redhead's "SW," the lyrics may seem cryptic and difficult to decipher. However, with careful examination, it becomes apparent that the song is dealing with the theme of contrast, specifically between what is kept and what is given away, what is done and what is left undone.

The first verse presents the idea that what we keep for ourselves is more important than what we give. "It's not what you give but it's what you kept" suggests that holding onto something has more meaning than giving it away. Similarly, the second line implies that who we leave behind is more significant than who we harm or kill. The second verse further explores the idea of contrast, emphasizing that it's not just the words we speak or the things we seek that matter, but rather the impact they have and what we possess as a result. The repetition of "I am" throughout the song suggests introspection and self-reflection, perhaps indicating that the contrasts being explored are also internal struggles.

The repeated chorus, "It's not what it seems," implies that there is a deeper meaning to the song that may not be immediately clear. This could be interpreted in several ways, such as the discrepancies between what one portrays outwardly and what is truly happening inside.

Overall, "SW" is a thought-provoking song that invites listeners to consider the contrasts in their own lives and the impact these have on themselves and those around them.

This track is so amazingly peculiar... the part with the trombone reminds me of that beautiful strangeness you can only find on a few records from the 70ies, such as Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother", the Serge Gainsbourg's uncontested masterpiece "histoire de Melody Nelson", and also "Rock Bottom" by Robert Wyatt; all those albums contain arrangements similar to the ones we can find here. It's a kind of emotional palette that is so deeply connected to the subconscious of a whole era that you normally can't reproduce that particular emotion in modern times. I guess Blonde Redhead are living in a typical italian town coming right out of a Fellini movie... untouched by the erosion of time... 😆💓💞💗

To this day nothing makes me have a vicious attack of air-drumming quite like this jam. Publisher is second! Simone's ride bell usage is phenomenal. He's phenomenal. The three of them are!

I have to say - I rediscovered this song after 11 years of forgetting its existance and I am in love ! I had originally downloaded albumn in 2009, somehow this track was corrupted or something and went missing from album. I guess @ the time I didn't think much of it. Years of listening to the rest of the album I managed to forget about the track. Then , I was on spotify and just listening to their newest release. The tracks played through and led from album to next album and BOOM this song came on after familiar tracks and caught me off guard...I was like WTH is this? What? Wait a sec....I looked and indeed this song was supposed to be on my album. Went into my itunes and grabbed the missing track and downloaded it! It's like new music! Very neat to rediscover this long lost gem of a track!!

Definitely "Left". All the lyrics are based on those very obvious opposites while expressing a wide spectrum of implications...
