Chosen
Blood Orange Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the last weekend of september
I stayed up all night long
Waiting for the fire ache in my heart to subside
It never happened
He was the most beautiful boy I'd ever seen
Most beautiful boy I'd ever met
My favorite books
Around the clock scars of my knee
I see him behind my lids in a bright grey shirt
I see him tripping running and falling, covered in dirt
I see a lot of these things lately I know
I know none of it is real

It's in the way that he moves
But I don't want to choose
Another day and I'll lose
But I don't want to choose, oh

Oh
Face to the ground
Change the sound
Time in your mind
Make it right

It's in the way that he moves
But I don't want to choose
Another day and I'll lose
But I don't want to choose, oh

Oh
Face to the ground
Change the sound
Time in your mind
Make it right

Baby, let me take you home
It's in the way that he moves
Baby, let me take you home
But I don't want to choose
Baby, let me take you home
Oh
Yeah
Baby, let me take you home
Another day and I'll lose
Baby, let me take you home
But I don't want to choose
Baby, let me take you home

Oh, oh
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Blood Orange’s “Chosen” describe the internal struggle of the singer as they grapple with feelings of love and attraction towards someone they cannot have. The first verse sets the scene: it’s the last weekend of September and the singer is restless, unable to sleep as they wait for their heartache to fade. The following lines describe “the most beautiful boy” the singer has ever seen, and although they see him in their mind’s eye, they acknowledge that “none of it is real.” The second verse repeats the refrain of not wanting to choose, admitting that they will lose another day if they don’t make a decision, but they’re reluctant to do so. The final stanza ends with a plea to “take you [the listener] home,” which could be interpreted as a fantasy or a desire for connection.

The song is a reflection on the complexities of desire – sometimes we are drawn to people who are unavailable or who we know will bring us pain. The repeated refrain of “I don’t want to choose” speaks to the fear of rejection and the reluctance to make oneself vulnerable. The line “face to the ground, change the sound” suggests a desire to escape, to change the circumstances to make the feelings go away.

Overall, “Chosen” is a poignant meditation on unrequited love and the inner turmoil that comes with it. Although it is a personal narrative, it speaks to universal emotions and experiences.

This song reminds me of a girl I met in high school. I can still remember in a very accurate way how we used to laugh with and about eachother. Little did I know that she loved me. I had a really strong connection to her, but at the time I had a girfriend that I was in love with. Wish I had noticed the feeling that I had for this special girl. She was such a good friend, so smart and lovely (even though most guys will never see this side of her). A while ago I found out that she had found somebody and she was pretty happy. And I am happy for her.
I can only wish that both of us loved eachother at the right moment.
