Spinning Wheel
Blood Sweat And Tears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What goes up must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles it's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel spin

You got no money and you got no home
Spinnin' wheel all alone
Talkin' 'bout your troubles and you, you never learn
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel turn

Did you find the directing sign on the
Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true
Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true

Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel fly

Overall Meaning

"Spinning Wheel" is a song that describes the ups and downs of life, using the metaphor of a spinning wheel that must keep turning, just like life. The first verse talks about the inevitability of life; what goes up must come down and how one must keep moving forward. The chorus offers an escape from one's troubles with a painted pony spinning on a wheel - an escape from one's problems, but not from the spinning of the wheel of life.

The second verse goes deeper into the struggles of life; being alone and penniless. It also touches on the theme of not learning from one's past mistakes as one is still talking about the troubles that haunt them. The third stanza offers a hopeful message, asking if one is able to find a direction or reflecting sign in life. The image of reflecting sign that shines within one's mind is powerful as it represents a person's own inner knowledge of what is right for them.

The last verse brings the listener back to the present moment and offers a hopeful and optimistic message that suggests that someone is waiting for them. The painted pony could represent the opportunities that life has to offer, as well as the unpredictability of the future.

Overall, "Spinning Wheel" portrays the experience of not being in control of one's life, but the need to keep moving and to keep up with the twists and turns of life. It is a reminder that in the end, someone is waiting for us and we need to be ready to catch those opportunities.

I was 11 years old when this song came out. I'm 63 now, I survived colon cancer and Covid 19. When I will be gone, this song will still be carrying on and on and on. Great song, God knows how I miss the 60s and the 70s.

Congrats on beating colon cancer. I've been stage 4 cancer for just over 3-years but am feeling good for the most part. [I might beat it.] What would we do without YouTube, every hit from the past is at our fingertips. Peace brother.
