For the First Time
Bloodstone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Proposed the Sphinx
What creature walks on four legs in the
Morning, two legs at noon and three in the evening?
Oedipus solved the riddle with this answer:
"Man walked on his hands and feet when young. At noon, in middle life,
He walked erect on two feet and in the afternoon
Of life he walked with the aid of a walking stick."
For the first time:
When I wake up in the morning for the
First time, there's nothing on my mind;
As the days go by I begin to realize
Something is happening to me
I don't know who you are but you've been real good to me
You keep me warm, you protect me from all harm

When I wake up in the morning,
Over and over again, things have begun to stick to my mind;
As the days have gone by,
I begin to realize all the good things that have happened to me;
I'm gonna call you mother- oh as a father you've been real good to me;
You kept me warm, you protected me from all harm;
Mother and Father you'll be!

For the first time... la la la...

For the first time I see the world as it is;
And it's so beautiful- Mother and Father, please tell me...

What am I afraid, what is there to fear?
The world is but young and new to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bloodstone's "For The First Time" contain references to the Sphinx's riddle and Oedipus' answer. The Sphinx's riddle asks what creature walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening. Oedipus solved the riddle by saying that it was the evolution of a human life - crawling on hands and knees as a baby, walking upright as an adult, and using a cane in old age.

The song opens with the singer waking up in the morning with nothing on their mind. As time goes on, they begin to realize that something good is happening to them. The singer is grateful for the protection that they have received from an unknown person, whom they address as both mother and father. The chorus repeats the phrase "For the First Time" as if the singer is experiencing a new sense of gratitude and appreciation. The final verse shows that the singer is seeing the world with new eyes and that it is beautiful. The singer asks for guidance and reassurance from their protectors, whom they refer to as mother and father.

The song's message is one of gratitude and appreciation for anonymous protectors who have helped the singer through a difficult time. The Sphinx's riddle serves as a metaphor for the evolution of human life, and the singer's experience is presented as a rebirth or new beginning. The song's tone is one of wonder and awe at the beauty of the world and the kindness of strangers.
