Good Life
Blossom Dearie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Seems to be the ideal
Yes, the good life let's you hide
All the sadness you feel.
You won't really fall in love,
For you can't take the chance
So be honest with yourself,
It's the good life
To be free and explore the unknown,
Like the heartaches
When you learn you must face them alone.
Please remember, I still love you,
And in case you don't know,
Well, just wake up,
Kiss the good life "hello".
Blossom Dearie's song "Good Life" is a reflection on the meaning and value of a life that is filled with happiness and pleasure. The song opens by suggesting that the good life is the ideal life, one that is full of fun and joy. However, the second line also hints at the potential for sadness and despair that may be hidden behind such a life. The good life, it seems, is not a guarantee of happiness, but rather a way to escape from the sadness that might otherwise consume us.
The song goes on to explore the idea of love and relationships within the context of the good life. The singer warns that falling in love is a risky proposition and suggests that it may be best to avoid such entanglements altogether. She advises the listener to be honest with themselves and not to fake romance. It is better, she suggests, to remain free and explore the unknown, even if that means facing heartache and pain alone.
Despite this warning, the singer concludes the song by assuring the listener that she still loves them. She suggests that they should embrace the good life and all of its pleasures, but not forget the love that they share. The final line, "Just wake up, kiss the good life 'hello'," suggests that the good life is not something that we can take for granted or passively enjoy, but something that we must actively engage with and embrace.
