I'm in the Mood for Love
Blossom Dearie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love

Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
I'm in the mood for love?

Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid

If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it

But for tonight, forget it
I'm in the mood for love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Blossom Dearie's "I'm in the Mood for Love" are a testament to how love can make one feel. The first verse conveys that the singer is feeling love simply because their object of affection is near them. The proximity of the person is enough to put the singer in a mood of love. It is interesting to note how the singer finds the situation to be funny, suggesting that they were not expecting to feel this way.

The second verse describes the beauty of the other person, likening their eyes to heaven and the stars above. The singer admits to being wonderstruck by the other person's beauty, cementing their feelings of love. The third verse is an assertion of their love for each other, a declaration that is strengthened by the metaphor of putting their hearts together to become one. They are not afraid of what the future holds because they believe their love will withstand any challenge.

Finally, the fourth verse acknowledges that there may be trouble ahead, but for tonight, they choose to bask in their love and forget the world. This song is a beautiful expression of the power of love to transform one's mood and outlook on life.

What a beautiful song! I feel so lucky that we got to hear Blossom Dearie in NY in 2001 and still think fondly about that night.
The entire audience was mesmerized, completely under her spell.
I even got to chat with her and thank her after the show. She was a wonderful person and a very talented artist. As a pianist I really appreciate that she chooses each note carefully instead of playing a ton of notes like some jazz players do. She’s a purist and her style is minimalist, but each bite is a real treat and leaves us wanting more.

聴くと胸が苦しくなる。郷愁が込み上げてくるのは何故だろうか、この曲に出逢えてよかったです。

26 year old here. Love me some Blossom Dearie. What a class act.

@fosbury68

Love the simplicity and momentum of her 2 bar intro. She looks so youthful, amazing to find out she was 41 when this performance was filmed.

@Joeyrobertparks

Really? I was thinking early 30’s!

@fosbury68

@@Joeyrobertparks Blossom was born in April 1924 so in 1965 she would have been 41. She passed away in Feburary 2009 at age 84.

@suntzu6122

What!!! Wow. She looks 20.

@MrBoopsyBoo

40 is old? Ha!

@EricLikness

Not just that, but her playing, and that VOICE. It's the opposite of Peggy Lee and Julie London.

She said she's a jazz musician, learning to be a jazz singer.

Seems she nailed both. Very underrated as a pianist.
