I Won't Dance
Blossom Dearie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I won't dance, don't ask me
I won't dance, don't ask me
I won't dance madame with you
My heart won't let me feet do things that they should do

You know what, you're lovely
You know what, you're so lovely
And you know what you do to me
I'm like an ocean wave that's bumped on the shore
I feel so absolutely stumped on the floor

When you dance, you're charming and you're gentle
Specially when you do The Continental
But this feeling isn't purely mental
For heaven rest us, I'm not asbestos
And that's why

I won't dance, why should I?
I won't dance, how could I?
I won't dance, merci beaucoup

I know that music lead the way to romance
So if I hold you in arms, I won't dance

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song 'I Won't Dance' by Blossom Dearie lays out the singer's hesitation to dance. The repetition of the line "I won't dance, don't ask me" emphasizes the stubbornness and reluctance the singer feels towards dancing. She goes on to explain that her heart won't allow her feet to do what they should, which suggests that dancing is an action that requires emotional vulnerability. The refusal to dance is not simply a physical choice, but a deliberate effort to avoid emotional intimacy.

In the second verse, the singer acknowledges the charm and loveliness of her dance partner, but emphasizes her own vulnerability and sense of insecurity. The line "I'm like an ocean wave that's bumped on the shore" suggests a lack of control or agency, contrasting with the specific and deliberate movements of dance. The contrast between her partner's effortless dancing and her own sense of being "stumped on the floor" highlights the insecurity and self-doubt that underlies the refusal to dance.

The chorus repeats the line "I won't dance" but adds more context to the singer's feelings. She acknowledges the potential for music and dance to lead to romance, but ultimately decides to avoid this by refusing to dance. The use of French in the final line, "merci beaucoup," adds a touch of humor and flirtation to the song, but the underlying theme of emotional avoidance and self-protection remains.

This great album.(my first Dearie just a couple weeks ago) is so well balanced, well..it hits a groove in the middle of the album that just RULES! the choice of songs is THE BEST. And I believe it's her on piano...and if true...she's doing Bill Evans before Bill did it. This album is classic!

Blossom swung harder in microcosm than any band I know of did in macro----the smaller the microcosm was the harder and more perfectly she swung, as evinced by her recordings with only her own piano accompaniment. Those remain my favorite. Only analogous singers I know with similar power to move: Mel Torme, Eva Cassidy.
