It Amazes Me

My weight, just average
And my IQ is like you'd estimate, just average
But evidently he does not agree
Consequently if I seem at sea
It amazes me, it simply amazes me
What he sees in me dazzles me
That I've learned to clip my wings
And soften my ways
These are ordinary things unworthy of praise
Yet he praises my
Just knowing I try for him
When so many would
If they could, die for him
I'm the one who's worldly wise
And nothing much fazes me
But to see me in his eyes
It just amazes me
I'm the one who's worldly wise
And nothing much fazes me
But to see me in his eyes
It just amazes me
The lyrics to Blossom Dearie's song "It Amazes Me" explore the concept of self-worth and how one can be surprised by another person's admiration for them. The singer describes themselves as average, both in physical appearance and intelligence. However, despite this, someone in their life sees something special in them that they themselves are unable to recognize. This realization astonishes and dazzles the singer, as they have become accustomed to thinking of themselves as ordinary.
The second stanza of the song describes the changes that the singer has consciously made to be closer to the person who admires them. They have learned to be more accommodating and gentle, traits that the singer believes are not particularly noteworthy. However, the person who admires them sees great value in these small things. The singer goes on to describe how this person's praise has made them feel appreciated and valued, even though they had previously dismissed their own qualities as unremarkable.
In the final stanza, the song highlights the contrast between the singer's worldly-wise perspective and their amazement at the admiration they receive. While the singer is usually unflappable and accustomed to life's ups and downs, the way this person sees them makes them feel amazed and even a little overwhelmed. The song serves as a reminder that sometimes we need someone else's perspective to see our own worth and value.

on Comment Allez Vous
(Parlez-vous Français?)
Mais oui, allons-y
(Parlez-vous chère madame?)
Comment allez vous? Fancy bumping into you
Comment allez vous? Tell me everything that's new
Are you happy are you sad?
Feeling good or feeling bad?
(and is there anything you're craving?)
(do you feel like misbehaving?)
Comment allez vous? Gee, it's nice to see you here
Comment allez vous? You look better every year
I was really on my way, but I had to stop and say:
Comment allez vous?
(Comment allez vous petit chou?)
Say it, it has 'savoir faire'
(Comment allez vous mon minou?)
Has a continental air
(once she heard it in the land, from a chinese laundry man)
Cloaks and suitors, by the oodles, say it to their cute french poodles
Comment allez vous?
Spaniards say it, so do Greeks
Comment allez vous?
In the desert, so do Sheiks
(show they know a thing or two)
(it's so easy, why can't you say?)
Comment?
Comment?
Comment allez vous?
