They Can
Blossom Dearie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our romance won't end on a sorrowful note,
Though by tomorrow you're gone;
The song is ended, but as the songwriter wrote,
The melody lingers on.
They may take you from me, I'll miss your fond caress.
But though they take you from me, I'll still possess.

The way you wear your hat
The way your sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

Can't take that away
Can't take that away from me

Overall Meaning

The song "They Can't Take That Away from Me" by Blossom Dearie speaks to the enduring power of memory, in particular how it can preserve the essence of a romantic relationship even when the relationship itself is lost. The lyrics reflect on a past love affair that is about to end, but rather than focus on the sadness or regret of that ending, the song instead emphasizes the positive memories that will remain. The singer acknowledges that even though their partner may be physically leaving, they will always hold onto the unique and beautiful qualities that drew the singer to them in the first place.

The lyrics of the song describe the specific details of the relationship that the singer treasures most: the way their partner wears their hat, sips their tea, and grins with joy. These details are presented as both unique to the individual and emblematic of the relationship as a whole. The song also speaks to the possibility of having to say goodbye forever, but insists that the memories of these precious moments together will remain, even if the relationship itself is gone.

Perhaps what makes this song so touching and memorable is its ability to capture what it feels like to truly love and cherish someone--not necessarily the big or grand gestures, but the small details that make that person unique and special. Through its gentle melody and bittersweet lyrics, "They Can't Take That Away from Me" speaks to a universal human experience of holding onto what we love even as it slips through our fingers.

Lyrics:
When I was young I lived in a world of dreams
Of moods and myths and illusionary schemes
Though now I'm much more grown up
I fear that I must own up
To the fact that I'm in doubt of
What the modern cynics shout of

They say it's spring
This feeling light as a feather
They say this thing
This magic we share together
Came with the weather too

They say it's May
That's made me daft as a daisy
It's May, they say
That gave the whole world this crazy
Heavenly, hazy hue

I'm a lark
On the wing
I'm the spark of a firefly's fling

Yet to me
This must be
Something more than a seasonal thing

Could it be spring
Those bells that I can hear ringing
It may be spring
But when the robins stop singing
You're what I'm clinging to
Though they say it's spring
It's you

If poets sing
That when a hard sympathetic
It's merely spring
Then poets plights are pathetic
Though I'm poetic too

They say it's spring
For lovers, there's where the lure is
That evil thing
For which September the cure is
This, they are sure is true

Though I know
That it's so
That my fancy may turn in the spring

With the right
One in sight
One can find a perpetual thing

Did I need spring
To bring the ring that you bought me
Though it was spring
That wondrous day that you caught me

Darling I thought we knew
That it wasn't spring
'Twas you

I played Blossom Dearie when I cared for my 83 year old bed-ridden aunt during her final year. Blossom made the pain bearable and relaxed her too. I miss you Ninang Mely. I hope you meet Blossom there too. ❣️

How absolutely sweet and beautiful!❤

I'm so sorry for your lost 😢 and I'm sure you miss her so much but God promise that he . . . will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain.”—Revelation 21:3, 4. So it shows that God doesn't cause suffering but also that promise shows that very soon he's going to put an end to all human suffering. How do you feel about that?

Mom spent her last few years with me before she died at 100. She and dad were huge music fans, mostly classical but also jazz. She had seen Blossom several times, once in Paris but mostly in NY. We lived in Chicago when I was a kid but every year around their Oct anniversary dad would arrange his annual trip to the NY office and take her along so they could go to the Met, take in a show and go to jazz clubs. In a perfect bit of intergenerational serendipity one day I was listening to a 70s Sirius channel on the way home from church and she asked who was on. "That's Elton John, Ma." "Oh yes, he named his piano Blossom."

I had the incredible joy of seeing Blossom Dearie perform here in Toronto at Top o' the Senator lounge some 20 years ago. We chatted briefly with her after.
