They Say It's Spring
Blossom Dearie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was young I lived in a world of dreams
Of moods and myths and illusionary schemes
Though now I'm much more grown up
I fear that I must own up
To the fact that I'm in doubt of
What the modern cynics shout of

They say it's spring
This feeling light as a feather
They say this thing
This magic we share together
Came with the weather too

They say it's May
That's made me daft as a daisy
It's May, they say
That gave the whole world this crazy
Heavenly, hazy hue

I'm a lark
On the wing
I'm the spark of a firefly's fling

Yet to me
This must be
Something more than a seasonal thing

Could it be spring
Those bells that I can hear ringing
It may be spring
But when the robins stop singing
You're what I'm clinging to
Though they say it's spring
It's you

If poets sing
That when a hard sympathetic
It's merely spring
Then poets plights are pathetic
Though I'm poetic too

They say it's spring
For lovers, there's where the lure is
That evil thing
For which September the cure is
This, they are sure is true

Though I know
That it's so
That my fancy may turn in the spring

With the right
One in sight
One can find a perpetual thing

Did I need spring
To bring the ring that you bought me
Though it was spring
That wondrous day that you caught me

Darling I thought we knew

That it wasn't spring
'Twas you

Overall Meaning

In "They Say It’s Spring," Blossom Dearie sings about the feeling of spring and how it affects people's emotions. As a child, she lived in a world of imagination and dreams, but as an adult, she's more cynical about the world. She's unsure about the feeling of this season and what modern cynics say about it. She is not convinced that spring is just a seasonal thing because it feels more like a perpetual thing when the right person comes along. She concludes that it's not spring that brings joy and love; it's the person that she shares it with.

Blossom Dearie's interpretation of spring in this song is unique because it does not focus on the beauty of nature, but instead emphasizes the emotional impact of the season. The lyrics celebrate the lightness of spring, the magic shared between people, and the joy that love brings. This song is a reflection of the artist's feelings towards the world and her understanding of love and the season of spring.

I played Blossom Dearie when I cared for my 83 year old bed-ridden aunt during her final year. Blossom made the pain bearable and relaxed her too. I miss you Ninang Mely. I hope you meet Blossom there too. ❣️

How absolutely sweet and beautiful!❤

@sssssss1800

I'm so sorry for your lost 😢 and I'm sure you miss her so much but God promise that he . . . will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain.”—Revelation 21:3, 4. So it shows that God doesn't cause suffering but also that promise shows that very soon he's going to put an end to all human suffering. How do you feel about that?

Mom spent her last few years with me before she died at 100. She and dad were huge music fans, mostly classical but also jazz. She had seen Blossom several times, once in Paris but mostly in NY. We lived in Chicago when I was a kid but every year around their Oct anniversary dad would arrange his annual trip to the NY office and take her along so they could go to the Met, take in a show and go to jazz clubs. In a perfect bit of intergenerational serendipity one day I was listening to a 70s Sirius channel on the way home from church and she asked who was on. "That's Elton John, Ma." "Oh yes, he named his piano Blossom."
