Blu DeTiger always knew that music was something that she wanted to do.
Born and raised in New York City, DeTiger first picked up a bass guitar when she was 7 years old after seeing her brother pick up drums.
βNaturally I thought, βOh I want to play an instrument too!β I was thinking to myself electric guitar was too mainstream β which is funny to think about because I was 7 years old and thinking like this βI wanted to be more unique,β said DeTiger. βI saw a lot of girls playing guitar but I didnβt see many girls playing bass. I went to guitar center and got one, it was taller than me. I took lessons, played with my brother a lot and fell in love with it.β
The now 21-year-old bassist played with the New York City-based School of Rock from the ages of 7 to 13, giving her early exposure to performing live. Throughout middle school and high school, DeTiger played in bands with her peers and started to get some of her writing chops.
βI wrote with bands in a group setting, it wasnβt really my own stuff,β said DeTiger. βI was always playing with older kids, in middle school I played with high school kids and in high school I played with college students. In New York, thereβs such a network here and you start to know everyone in music. Thatβs what was good about being born and raised here.β
By the time she was 17 years old DeTiger was touring with bands as a bass player for hire and started to kick off her own DJing career. Before she knew it, DeTiger was performing DJ sets at clubs and venues throughout the city.
However, it wasnβt until she started DJing that DeTiger felt the bug to write and perform her own original music.
βI would bring my bass with me to the sets and improvise over the pop songs,β said DeTiger. βWhen youβre a DJ, youβre controlling the room. Itβs in your power to make people dance or make people feel this way, itβs an interesting art form. Since I was improvising bass over it, the DJ thing really helped me realize that I wanted to express myself in that way and play my own music β I would think, βhow cool would it be if I just dropped my own song in this DJ set right now?'β
DeTiger started to write and release her own music in 2019 and landed a gig touring opening for The Knocks, an American electronic music duo. She had plans to tour in Europe this year with Fletcher, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2020, DeTiger released her single βFigure It Out,β a song that came to her naturally while she was playing music with a friend of hers. She later released the quarantine music video for the song, which was completely shot on an iPhone, following the success of the official music video.
βA lot of young girls are playing bass and saying my videos inspired them,β said DeTiger. βThere was a mini-trend of people learning the bassline to βFigure It Outβ and posting videos and tagging me β that all felt so amazing. It warms my heart so much to know that kids are inspired to pick up an instrument during this time.β
During these months of quarantine, DeTiger found herself falling into a routine of working through the night and sleeping until early afternoon. While she is normally a night owl, DeTiger was able to use this altered sleep schedule to her advantage and worked on music.
βIβm really excited to expand on my artistry and let my fans get to know me more,β said DeTiger.

I know you get off
Thinkin' that you got
Me all out of wack right now
It's sad, but it's funny
You'll keep on tryin', you'll keep on tryin' (wait up)
So small, I can't even see youIf we fought, I would defeat you
Still, you think that I need you
Still, you think that I need you
Let's get it out in the open
You're holdin' on to emotions
I'm not the one who was broken
You're not the one (wait up)
I saw the sun in your dark eyes
Thought we were one of a new kind
But you project your own life
On mine and act like it's alright
Let's get it out in the open
You're holdin' onto emotions
I'm not the one who is broken
You're not the one (wait up)
Every time you cut me down
I know you get off
Thinkin' that you got
Me all out of wack right now
It's sad, but it's funny
You'll keep on tryin', you'll keep on tryin' (wait up)
Every time you cut me down
I just laugh it off
Thinkin' that you gotMe all out of wack somehow
I bet all my money
You'll keep on tryin', you'll keep on tryin'
Yeah, I wonder who you think you are
An orbit 'round a superstar
Yeah, I know I'm shinin' bright
Didn't know you liked the dark
If I went and won Miss Universe
You'd be freakin' out when I'm out with friends
Wrote the best song in the world
You'd tear it up and say start again
I know what I've gotta do
To receive some love from you
I gotta self-sabotage
That kind of love is just a mirage
Try to make me smile 'cause that's how you feel
Cut me down when I'm wearin' heels
I'm laughin' 'bout it with all my friends
With how hard you're tryin'
Every time you cut me down
I know you get off
Thinkin' that you got
Me all out of wack right now
It's sad, but it's funny
You'll keep on tryin', you'll keep on tryin'
Every time you cut me down
I just laugh it off
Thinkin' that you got
Me all out of wack somehow
I bet all my money
You'll keep on tryin', you'll keep on tryin'
In the song "Cut Me Down" by Blu Detiger, the lyrics delve into a complex dynamic between two individuals. The repetition of being "cut down" by someone, and the realization that the person gets satisfaction from doing so, sets the tone for a relationship riddled with power struggles and attempts at control. The singer acknowledges the attempts to destabilize them and reveals the underlying irony in the situation, finding it both sad and humorous that the other person persists in their efforts.
The lyrics also touch upon the disparity in power between the singer and the other person, illustrating how the singer sees through the facade of dominance. Despite the attempts to belittle and diminish them, the singer exudes confidence by asserting that they are beyond the other person's reach. The line, "I'm not the one who was broken, you're not the one," underscores the singer's resilience and refusal to be defined by the other person's perceptions.
There is a sense of disillusionment as the singer reflects on a relationship that once seemed promising. The imagery of seeing the sun in the other person's dark eyes suggests a glimmer of hope that was eventually overshadowed by projections and misunderstandings. The confrontation of emotions that are being held onto suggests a need for clarity and honesty in order to move forward from the impasse that has been created.
The chorus of the song captures the ongoing cycle of being cut down and rising above it with resilience. The singer anticipates the continued efforts of the other person to undermine them, yet maintains a sense of detachment and amusement at the futility of these actions. The defiance and self-assuredness in the face of adversity are underscored by the refusal to conform to the expectations of the other person, ultimately reclaiming agency and autonomy in the relationship.

That was literally my thought. Itβs definitely a new era for her and it definitely is π₯π₯π₯. The best part about it is that it still has that Blu Detiger staple sound and vibe and is really just one of many extensions of her root sound we will probably see over the years with her. Itβs exponential with this girl here.
