Blu DeTiger always knew that music was something that she wanted to do.
Born and raised in New York City, DeTiger first picked up a bass guitar when she was 7 years old after seeing her brother pick up drums.
βNaturally I thought, βOh I want to play an instrument too!β I was thinking to myself electric guitar was too mainstream β which is funny to think about because I was 7 years old and thinking like this βI wanted to be more unique,β said DeTiger. βI saw a lot of girls playing guitar but I didnβt see many girls playing bass. I went to guitar center and got one, it was taller than me. I took lessons, played with my brother a lot and fell in love with it.β
The now 21-year-old bassist played with the New York City-based School of Rock from the ages of 7 to 13, giving her early exposure to performing live. Throughout middle school and high school, DeTiger played in bands with her peers and started to get some of her writing chops.
βI wrote with bands in a group setting, it wasnβt really my own stuff,β said DeTiger. βI was always playing with older kids, in middle school I played with high school kids and in high school I played with college students. In New York, thereβs such a network here and you start to know everyone in music. Thatβs what was good about being born and raised here.β
By the time she was 17 years old DeTiger was touring with bands as a bass player for hire and started to kick off her own DJing career. Before she knew it, DeTiger was performing DJ sets at clubs and venues throughout the city.
However, it wasnβt until she started DJing that DeTiger felt the bug to write and perform her own original music.
βI would bring my bass with me to the sets and improvise over the pop songs,β said DeTiger. βWhen youβre a DJ, youβre controlling the room. Itβs in your power to make people dance or make people feel this way, itβs an interesting art form. Since I was improvising bass over it, the DJ thing really helped me realize that I wanted to express myself in that way and play my own music β I would think, βhow cool would it be if I just dropped my own song in this DJ set right now?'β
DeTiger started to write and release her own music in 2019 and landed a gig touring opening for The Knocks, an American electronic music duo. She had plans to tour in Europe this year with Fletcher, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2020, DeTiger released her single βFigure It Out,β a song that came to her naturally while she was playing music with a friend of hers. She later released the quarantine music video for the song, which was completely shot on an iPhone, following the success of the official music video.
βA lot of young girls are playing bass and saying my videos inspired them,β said DeTiger. βThere was a mini-trend of people learning the bassline to βFigure It Outβ and posting videos and tagging me β that all felt so amazing. It warms my heart so much to know that kids are inspired to pick up an instrument during this time.β
During these months of quarantine, DeTiger found herself falling into a routine of working through the night and sleeping until early afternoon. While she is normally a night owl, DeTiger was able to use this altered sleep schedule to her advantage and worked on music.
βIβm really excited to expand on my artistry and let my fans get to know me more,β said DeTiger.
Latency

Baby two-seater, solo
I was out late
Trouble on the way
I'm cravin' the thrills, yeah, I wanna know
Set me free in the wreckin' zone
I blow 'em all away
Fever on the brain
Trippin' on latency
Hazy with the gasoline
Too heady for a Monday
People think I'm in love
I've never been dumb enough
Too lazy for a Sunday
Give a silent shout in the atrium
Hear it bounce back from the stadium
Give it a shake
It's all the same
Flippin' through my magazine
Seein' every face starin' back at me
Gotta get away
Fever on the brain
Trippin' on latency
Hazy with the gasoline
Too heady for a Monday
People think I'm in love
I've never been dumb enough
Too lazy for a Sunday
In the lyrics of Blu Detiger's song "Latency," the persona describes going on a detour, possibly metaphorical, and being alone in a two-seater car. They mention being out late and encountering trouble, implying a sense of rebellion and excitement. The persona craves thrills and wants to be set free in a reckless and chaotic environment, suggesting a desire for liberation and escapism. The reference to having a "fever on the brain" could signify a relentless passion or obsession driving their actions.
The persona acknowledges being "trippin' on latency," which could suggest being lost in a daze or delay, perhaps unable to fully connect with reality. The imagery of being "hazy with the gasoline" adds to the surreal and dreamlike quality of the experiences described. The mention of being "too heady for a Monday" suggests feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from the mundane routines of everyday life, seeking a more intense and intoxicating existence.
The persona reflects on how others perceive them, with some assuming they are in love, but the persona dismisses this notion, indicating they have never been naive enough to fall into such a simple emotion. The persona also mentions being "too lazy for a Sunday," possibly alluding to a sense of restlessness or dissatisfaction even during times traditionally associated with relaxation and leisure.
The persona experiences a sense of isolation and detachment, symbolized by giving a "silent shout in the atrium" and hearing it echo back from an empty stadium. The repetition of feeling stuck in a monotonous cycle is highlighted through "flippin' through my magazine, Seein' every face starin' back at me." They express a need to escape and break free from this suffocating routine, with the constant "fever on the brain" driving their desire for change and adventure.
