Blu DeTiger always knew that music was something that she wanted to do.
Born and raised in New York City, DeTiger first picked up a bass guitar when she was 7 years old after seeing her brother pick up drums.
“Naturally I thought, ‘Oh I want to play an instrument too!’ I was thinking to myself electric guitar was too mainstream — which is funny to think about because I was 7 years old and thinking like this —I wanted to be more unique,” said DeTiger. “I saw a lot of girls playing guitar but I didn’t see many girls playing bass. I went to guitar center and got one, it was taller than me. I took lessons, played with my brother a lot and fell in love with it.”
The now 21-year-old bassist played with the New York City-based School of Rock from the ages of 7 to 13, giving her early exposure to performing live. Throughout middle school and high school, DeTiger played in bands with her peers and started to get some of her writing chops.
“I wrote with bands in a group setting, it wasn’t really my own stuff,” said DeTiger. “I was always playing with older kids, in middle school I played with high school kids and in high school I played with college students. In New York, there’s such a network here and you start to know everyone in music. That’s what was good about being born and raised here.”
By the time she was 17 years old DeTiger was touring with bands as a bass player for hire and started to kick off her own DJing career. Before she knew it, DeTiger was performing DJ sets at clubs and venues throughout the city.
However, it wasn’t until she started DJing that DeTiger felt the bug to write and perform her own original music.
“I would bring my bass with me to the sets and improvise over the pop songs,” said DeTiger. “When you’re a DJ, you’re controlling the room. It’s in your power to make people dance or make people feel this way, it’s an interesting art form. Since I was improvising bass over it, the DJ thing really helped me realize that I wanted to express myself in that way and play my own music — I would think, ‘how cool would it be if I just dropped my own song in this DJ set right now?'”
DeTiger started to write and release her own music in 2019 and landed a gig touring opening for The Knocks, an American electronic music duo. She had plans to tour in Europe this year with Fletcher, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2020, DeTiger released her single “Figure It Out,” a song that came to her naturally while she was playing music with a friend of hers. She later released the quarantine music video for the song, which was completely shot on an iPhone, following the success of the official music video.
“A lot of young girls are playing bass and saying my videos inspired them,” said DeTiger. “There was a mini-trend of people learning the bassline to ‘Figure It Out’ and posting videos and tagging me — that all felt so amazing. It warms my heart so much to know that kids are inspired to pick up an instrument during this time.”
During these months of quarantine, DeTiger found herself falling into a routine of working through the night and sleeping until early afternoon. While she is normally a night owl, DeTiger was able to use this altered sleep schedule to her advantage and worked on music.
“I’m really excited to expand on my artistry and let my fans get to know me more,” said DeTiger.

It was summer of 16
Me and the girls, we looked so mean
Dancing ourselves clean
Sweet like ice cream
Couldn't you hear what you said
Baby, what's in your head
Dancing ourselves cleanSweet like ice cream
Maybe I like you
And you might like me
(Wow) My heart beats
On the roof on the corner of Canal St.
(Hah) That's so deep
Cry purple rain on me
(Wow) Your heart beats
On the roof on the corner of Canal St.
(Hey...hey..hey...hey do do do do Hey...hey..hey...hey Ooh oh oh oh ah)
Question
Can you tell what I think?
Loose pants, side glance, and you got some cool rings
Looking up at the star signs
I wonder if we align
Oh I thought you were a godsend
A perfect ten
But your homegirl pulled me aside
Oh shit -- I think you're a gemini
Maybe I like you
And you might like me
(Wow) My heart beatsOn the roof on the corner of Canal St.
(Hah) That's so deep
Cry purple rain on me
(Wow) Your heart beats
On the roof on the corner of Canal St.
I think I might bounce
Guess it didn't work out (Work out)
Then you told me that you missed me
Yeah that's pretty wack (That's wack)
So I'mma dance on my own
So call yourself an Uber and get your ass home
'Cause I heard you have a girlfriend
And I'm better off alone
I'm like wow wow wow
Like wow wow wow
Wow wow wow
I'm like ow ow ow
Oh! Maybe I like you
And you might like me
(Wow) My heart beats
On the roof on the corner of Canal St. (Oh)
(Hah) That's so deep (That's so deep)
Cry purple rain on me (Purple rain on me)
(Wow) Your heart beats
On the roof on the corner of Canal St.
The lyrics of Blu DeTiger's song "Night Shade" tell a story of attraction, confusion, and ultimately, self-realization. In the opening lines, the singer reminisces about a summer night in 2016 when they and their friends felt confident and empowered. The line "Dancing ourselves clean, sweet like ice cream" conveys a sense of freedom and joy in their collective experience. However, there is also an undertone of uncertainty as they question the meaning behind someone's words and actions.
As the song continues, the singer expresses their growing feelings for someone, hoping for reciprocation. They mention the physical sensation of their heart beating, symbolizing their excitement and vulnerability. The reference to the roof on the corner of Canal St. adds a specific and vivid location to the narrative. The line "Cry purple rain on me" could be interpreted as a reference to Prince's iconic song "Purple Rain" or a metaphorical expression of emotional intensity.
The lyrics then shift to a moment of doubt and confusion. The singer wonders if they can accurately perceive the thoughts and intentions of the person they are interested in. The mention of "loose pants, side glance, and cool rings" suggests a detailed observation of this person, perhaps searching for clues or signs of compatibility. The mention of star signs and aligning suggests a desire for cosmic connection or compatibility.
However, their initial fascination is shattered when they discover that the person they were interested in is a Gemini, as revealed by their "homegirl." This realization seems to disrupt the singer's perception of this person, possibly due to preconceived notions about astrology or previous experiences with Geminis. The shift from considering them a "godsend" to being unsure of their compatibility reflects the singer's changing perspective.
In the final verse, the singer decides to move on from this confusing situation. They express frustration with the other person's mixed signals and the fact that they have a girlfriend. They choose to prioritize their own happiness and independence by dancing alone and suggesting the other person find their own way home. The repetition of "wow" and "ow" in the chorus emphasizes the singer's mix of surprise, disappointment, and determination to move forward.
Ultimately, the lyrics of "Night Shade" capture a rollercoaster journey of attraction, confusion, and self-empowerment. The singer discovers the importance of self-worth and realizing they deserve better than being caught in a confusing and potentially unfaithful relationship.
