Hound Dog
Blue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round the door
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more

You told me you was high-class
But I could see through that
Yes, you told me you was high-class
But I could see through that
And daddy, I know
You ain't no real cool cat

You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round the door
You're just an old hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more, oh play it on Sam, oh!

Aw, listen to that there old hound dog
Oh, play it, it s'all right in here
Oh, listen to that there old hound dog holler
Oh, play it boy, play it
Oh, you make me feel good
Oh, do the mess around right now, yeah
Now wag your tail
Oh, get it now
Oh, get it now, get it, get it, get it
Oh, go, holler boy

You made me feel so blue
You made me weep and moan
You made me feel so blue
Well you made me weep and moan
'Cause you ain't looking for a woman
All you lookin' is for a home

You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Quit snoopin' 'round the door
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Quit snoopin' 'round my door

You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more, oh!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Hound Dog" by Blues reveal a sense of resentment and disappointment towards a man who has betrayed and misled the singer. The use of the metaphor of a "hound dog" suggests that the man is unfaithful and disloyal, always snooping around and looking for something new. The singer refuses to give in to his advances and won't be manipulated by his charms, instead choosing to stand her ground and cut him off. This sense of empowerment is shown through the repetition of "I ain't gonna feed you no more", indicating that she is done with his games.

The chorus also reinforces this idea, with the use of the phrase "you ain't no real cool cat" suggesting that the man is trying too hard to impress and be something he's not. The use of the word "daddy" in this part of the song implies a father figure, further adding to the sense of disappointment and betrayal felt by the singer.

Overall, "Hound Dog" is a song that speaks to the universal experience of being let down and manipulated by someone you once trusted. The repetition of key phrases and the use of metaphors helps to emphasize the singer's sense of empowerment and finality in ending things with this man.

Love mine! Can’t imagine having another dog. He is so smart, loyal, cuddly, protective of the house, and cute as can be!

@Hey There hey. Don’t know if ur still up for one but they aren’t AS vocal as ppl say they are can be trained. They need a active household but are very loyal dogs

Hey There

What’s his activity requirements like? Is he uncontrollably vocal?

Iv been playing with the idea of a dog for years but I like em all and want to make sure I have the right environment for them so just curious what it’s like. Saw one recently and he actually seemed very relaxed going for a walk .

My sweet girl Pepper is turning 4 soon! She was born with a tail defect, causing it to scrunch up and form an S shape. Her breeder didn't seem too happy with it, locking her up in a barn for the first 6 months of her life... so me and the family got her out of there. Can say she's the happiest she's ever been, and gets all the love she deserves! Wouldn't trade her for the world. <3

I liked the look of this breed. Researched to make sure temperament and behavior was what I wanted. Found an excellent breeder. My puppy is now 10 months old. She can be a handful but I am very happy to have her. Wonderful breed of dog.

One of the major founder breed was the french " Bleu de Gascogne"; and right, Washington loved this gift by the frenchman👍They already looked quite the same; a little bit longer in body maybe and with longer ears. There is also an american association for the " American blue gasgone"; in France they are very uncommun now. Beautiful dogs and very functional both, the Bleu de Gascogne ( Azul de gascuña ) and the Blueticked Coonhound! Greets from Europe. Thanks a lot.

Yes in France the Blue du Gascogne is not a really well know breed, rarely seen. Also is the dog used to get basset blue and hound... The Blue my grandpa was using more as a game like the pachon Navarro, kinda tracking and pointing dog, has this attitude this breed and the BlueTick is basically to track the pray....I have a Black &Tan coonhound now doing the same job while we Hunt. ..with the mix of the foxhounds I believe that they was loosing the characteristics of work of the Blue but not the look.....
Really beautiful and amazing breed, the BlueTick

I just lost mine last month. My heart is still broken. I have never had a dog like him and never will again. Blue Ticks are the best. RIP Charlie. 😞

We have a mixed puppy from the shelter we believe is bluetick coonhound and pug. She chases the chihuahua around the house to play and always grabs him by his back leg to get his attention. 😂

Our Bassett hound had to be euthanized in January due to cancer. I told my wife I wouldn't get another dog unless I got another hound. In March we were fortunate enough to get a young female blue tick hound. She is definitely rambunctious, but my 8 year old daughter keeps her entertained. 😀
