Harvest Moon
Blue Öyster Cult Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This place has a history
The Spaniards settled here
They burned the town and fields
They moved away from here
My grandma often told me
She knew it peaceful here
The war took all the vigor
War took the best from here

Ah ah ah ah when the wind turns
Ah ah ah ah and blows the leaves from the trees
Ah ah ah ah harvest moon

I see the days grow shorter
I feel the nights grow cold harvest moon
Young people feelin' restless
Old people feelin' old Harvest moon
I sense the darkness clearer
I feel a presence here Harvest moon
A change in the weather
I love this time of year harvest moon

The Cobys worked that valley
They gave that land a go
They built a thriving business
Then came that early snow
They lost their livestock that year
They lost their sheep and goats
They sold the farm in springtime
Went south to work the boats

Ah ah ah ah when the wind turns
Ah ah ah ah and blows the leaves from the trees
Ah ah ah ah harvest moon

I see the days grow shorter
I feel the nights grow cold Harvest moon
Young people feelin' restless
Old people feelin' old Harvest moon
I sense the darkness clearer
I feel a presence here harvest moon
A change in the weather
I love this time of year harvest moon

Ten years in this farmhouse
Ten years come this May
My simple needs are covered
Since grandma passed away
Long time since there's been trouble
That's what the people say
I told the new man when I
Sold the farm today

Ah ah ah ah when the wind turns
Ah ah ah ah and blows the leaves from the trees
Ah ah ah ah harvest moon

I sense the darkness clearer
I feel a presence here harvest moon
A change in the weather
I feel some evil here harvest moon
I hear some frightful noises
I don't go out at night Harvest moon
Since Bobrow's youngest daughter
Disappeared from sight Harvest moon

I know they'll find her some day
They find them all that way harvest moon
After the thaw in springtime
The snow melts away Harvest moon
I see the days grow shorter
I feel the nights grow cold harvest moon

Young people feelin' restless
Old people feelin' old harvest moon

Overall Meaning

Harvest Moon by Blue Öyster Cult is a haunting song with a mournful melody that echoes through the verses of the lyrics. The place where the song is set has a history, as the Spaniards settled there and burned down the town and fields. Grandma often spoke about how peaceful it was here, and how the war took away the vitality from the place. The song paints a picture of a land that has been ravaged by time, war, and tragedy.

The lyrics speak of a change in the weather that comes in the form of the harvest moon, and the days grow shorter, and the nights grow colder. The young people restlessly search for purpose and direction, while the old folks feel the weight of time on their shoulders. The darkness is clearer, and a feeling of presence is overwhelming. The Cobys worked the land, but lost everything when an early snow fell, and they were forced to sell and move south to work the boats.

The song ends on a chilling note, as the singer tells the new man who bought the farm that he doesn't go out at night, as there is some evil there. He hears frightful noises, and since Bobrow's youngest daughter disappeared from sight, he knows they'll find her someday, as they always do after the thaw in springtime. The song leaves an impression of a place that is steeped in history and tragedy.

The best song on the album. It's old school BÖC with a slight touch of Lovecraft. :)

Nullname

Old BÖC is super heavy lovecraft though thats not new

Robert Krakowski

A deep powerful song. Nobody makes songs like this anymore.

Desdenova

check out BOC's Real World ( this album ) lyrically classic, thinking BOC

Plenty of people make music like this still, you just need to broaden your horizons. A singer named Jesca Hoop writes songs from her dream journal that have equally weird, if slightly more whimsical, lyrics.

fauque you're Monitering systems

Sure we do. We make music for free.
Because life is free.........time is all we are truly granted.
Forever on the edge of infinity, everything I have ever done was brand new.

Loving this band since 1978 is like being involved in a 39 year conspiracy theory. I mean I know & you know this is the greatest classic rock band out there, right ?? Best songwriters, fine musicians & of course the ace that is Mr Buck Dharma. Can't & doesn't get any better than that especially if you like a little weirdness here & there.
Somehow though the general rock loving public remains largely ignorant. Incredible, never have & never will understand how this band could be any better .... masterful ... genius ..... No.1 by a Country mile.

KRITICALITY GAMING

Absolute crime that they're not only not in the Hall of Fame, but that most casual rock fans have no clue who they even are. I'm only in college but I'm glad my dad raised me listening to the melodies of the greatest rock band of all time.

Gigabyte

Discovered them last year and was very surprised that their music is so obscure comapred to some other classic rock bands from 70's-80's...Secret treaties , Blue Öyster Cult, Heavens forbid and Agents of Fortune are probably as close to perfection as possible. Easily my favorite band of all time

Colin Ritter

Since the mid-1990s, but I can understand the conspiracy theory vibe. It's like being into a cult movie, except its decades of music.

Then again, some of my other musical tastes aren't too far off of "Cult Classics." Did you know that Suzanne Vega and Jill Sobule are still putting out albums?
