Blue Öyster Cult have been described as heavy metal, light metal, psychedelic rock, occult rock, acid rock, and progressive rock. They have also been recognized for helping pioneer genres such as stoner metal and speed metal.
The band is influenced by artists such as Alice Cooper, Grateful Dead, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, MC5, The Blues Project, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath.
While Blue Öyster Cult has been noted for heavy rock, they would often add their own tongue-in-cheek style. Keeping with their image, the band would often include out-of-context fragments of Pearlman’s The Soft Doctrines of Imaginos into their lyrics, giving their songs cryptic meanings. Additionally, the band would keep a folder of Meltzer’s and Pearlman’s word associations to insert into their music.
Blue Öyster Cult's longest-lasting and most commercially successful lineup included Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloom (lead vocals, "stun guitar," keyboards, synthesizers), Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Joe Bouchard (bass, backing vocals), Albert Bouchard (drums, percussion, backing vocals). The band's current lineup includes Roeser and Bloom, as well as Danny Miranda (bass, backing vocals), Jules Radino (drums, percussion) and Richie Castellano (keyboard, rhythm guitar, backing vocals).

And a little bit of water goes a long way, 'cause it's hot
Three good buddies were laughin' and smoking
In the back of a rented Ford
They couldn't know they weren't going far
Each one with the money in his pocket
Could go out and buy himself a brand new car
Money they hoped would take them very far
Sky's bright, the traffic light, now and then a truck
And they hadn't seen a cop around all day (what luck)
They brought everything they needed
Bags and scales to weigh the stuff
The driver said the border's just over the bluff
It wasn't until the car suddenly stopped
In the middle of a cold and barren place
And the other guy turned and spilled
Three boys blood, did they know a trap had been laid?
They're okay the last days of May, but I'll be breathin' dry air
I'm leaving soon, the others are already there (all there)
You wouldn't be interested in coming along, instead of staying here?
It's said the West is nice this time of year, that's what they say
Blue Öyster Cult's song "Then Came the Last Days of May" is a story of three friends who set out on a drug run from California to Mexico. The first stanza sets the scene of the desert, sun, and lack of water. The three friends are traveling in a rented Ford, laughing, and smoking. They all have enough money to buy themselves a new car, but instead, they are using their funds for a different purpose: to buy drugs to take them farther in life. They brought with them everything they needed – bags and scales to weigh the drugs – and the driver tells them that the border is just over the bluff.
However, the second verse takes a darker turn. The car suddenly stops in the middle of nowhere, and one of the friends turns on the other two, killing them both. The singer of the song, who is not one of the three friends, laments that he will be breathing dry air soon as he leaves the area. He invites the listener to come with him to the West, where it's nice this time of year, referencing the hope for a better life.
The song's lyrics have a darker and melancholic tone, as they depict the consequences of the three friends' drug run. It serves as a warning against the dangers of drugs and the companies that sell them. The song has an underlying theme of tragedy, and the once happy and free friends ultimately meet their tragic end.

Your taste is impeccable Tbone sir.
Secret Treaties, Tyranny and Mutation, Blue Oyster Cult = the 3 best albums with the 3 best album covers.
The Holy Trinity of B.O.C.
Definitely are other ''good'' albums, but for me these 3 were the absolute zenith of their work.

These are the last days of this May and I have this tradition in my head, to "celebrate" them by listening to this hymn of late spring. So, I'm once again here, as I've been doing for some years now.
To even more last days of May! 🎉🥂✨
@Psigrou22
Been doing the same since I discovered that song two years ago!
@dantheman4life
I will follow your tradition as the last days of May (25th) is my birthday. Keep playing this classic, ladies, and gentlemen!

Easily the most underrated band, can't believe no ones considered them for the rock and roll hall of fame.
