They hit the Top 40 of the R&B singles chart with their first three 45s before breaking through and crossing over with "Sideshow," released in April 1974, which went gold, topped the R&B charts, and became a Top Ten pop hit. "Three Ring Circus," their next single, made the R&B Top Ten and the pop Top 40. Blue Magic had two more R&B chart singles in 1975 and four in 1976 before suffering a career slump, but they still managed to influence many artists, such as The Mighty Majors ('You can Never go Back'), which opened a show for them once. Still, they returned with R&B chart singles in 1981 and 1983 and made a comeback album, From Out of the Blue, in 1989.

What's Come Over Me
Blue Magic Lyrics

What's come over me
I thought I saw your face
Wearing a smile, dimple on the side
What's come over me
(What's come over me)
What's come over me
What's wrong with my ears
They're deceiving me
I thought I heard you speak
Calling my name, I must be insane, I just can't explain
What's come over me
(What's come over me)
What's come over me
(What's come over me)
Don't tell me I've stumbled upon you
Or is my mind in a daze
For this can't be as real as I want it
For you let me go, then went way
Some kind of feelin'
(What's come over me)
Just look at me now, seems like I'm floating on a cloud
Oh, what could this be
What's come over me
(What's come over me, over me, come over me)
What's come over me
(Over me)
Over and over, baby
(What's come over me)
What's come over me
What's come over me
(Over me, come over me, over me)
(Ah ah)
You see, I must have gone through some changes when I kissed your picture
And hey, my mind just keeps on wondering when you only left me yesterday
I've never been to heaven, instead I spent the night with you
Maybe that's the reason I don't know what to do
What's come over me
What's come over me
(Over me, come over me, over me)
What's come over me
Over and over, baby
(What's come over me, over me, over me)
And I can't break free
What's come over me
Over and over and over and I just can't sleep
(What's come over me, over me, came over me, over me)
Tell me, tell me what's come over and over, baby
(What's come over me, over me, over me)
The lyrics to Blue Magic's song "What's Come Over Me" describe a person who is experiencing confusion and disbelief after seeing or hearing something that reminds them of someone they were once in a relationship with. They are questioning their own sanity and are unsure of whether they are imagining things or if the person is actually there. The lyrics reveal a sense of longing, as they wonder if the person has returned or if it's just their mind playing tricks on them.
The repetition of the phrase "What's come over me" throughout the song expresses the singer's sense of bewilderment; they can't quite put their finger on what's happening to them. They question their own perception of reality, exemplified when they say "I must be insane, I just can't explain." The passage "Don't tell me I've stumbled upon you, Or is my mind in a daze, For this can't be as real as I want it, For you let me go, then went way" illustrates their feeling of disbelief and the fact that they are not ready to accept that the person is back in their lives.
Overall, the lyrics of "What's Come Over Me" explore the emotions and confusion that come with coming into contact with a past love interest unexpectedly. The singer grapples with their own disbelief and heightened emotions as they try to navigate the situation.

Hey y'all, 6 years ago I posted a reaction to this song, and was nicely surprised by all the supportive comments. Just wanted to check and ask how you all were doing? I'm STILL listening to this music DAILY, lol. There's all these accounts in the media the past couple of years about how one group of people is targeting another group of people for assault and robbery. Yes, it's happening, but people need to distinguish it's "criminals" and not a race. Stand up to injustice regardless of what the perpetrators and victims look like. I feel like we need to go back in time (late '60s and '70s) and try again. I don't know WTH happened (well, I do - the pandemic and economy didn't help), but the way music, sports, entertainment, martial arts brought people together, maybe we need to remember what that was like. I live it, and I know you do, too. Let's keep promoting peace, empathy, compassion, unity and understanding. Blue Magic probably never considered we'd be talking about this over one of their songs 50 years later. ๐

Friend, if we donโt โteach the childrenโ like Teddy Pendergrass of Harold Melvin and the blue notes fame, any way this kind of gem will disappear from what could be a future of peace, love, unity and caring. Today those gone rogue against our way of life have to be changed from the inside mind, heart and soul. They donโt want it seems the peace and love we do.
