5 Days in May
Blue Rodeo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They met in a hurricane
Standing in the shelter out of the rain
She tucked a note into his hand
Later on they took his car
Drove on down where the beaches are
He wrote her name in the sand
Never even let go of her hand
Somehow they stayed that way
For those 5 days in May
Made all the stars around them shine
Funny how you can look in vain
Living on nerves and such sweet pain
The loneliness that cuts so fine
To find the face you've seen a thousand times

Sometimes the world begins
To set you up on your feet again
It wipes the tears from your eyes
How will you ever know
The way that circumstances go
Always going to hit you by surprise
I know my past
You were there
In everything I've done
You are the one

Looking back it's hard to tell
Why they stood while others fell
Spend your life working it out
All I know is one cloudy day
They both just ran away
Rain on the windshield heading South
She loved the lines around his mouth

Sometimes the world begins
To set you up on your feet again
It wipes the tears from your eyes
How will you ever know
The way that circumstances go
Always going to hit you by surprise
I know my past
You were there

In everything I've done
You are the one

Overall Meaning

The song Five Days in May by Blue Rodeo recounts a fleeting romance between two strangers who meet during a hurricane. The song evokes the intense feelings of longing and connection that often occur during romantic encounters, particularly when they are brief and unexpected. The first stanza describes how the two lovers meet and connect through the storm: the woman tucks a note into the man's hand as they stand in a shelter, and they later drive to the beach where they write each other's names in the sand. The rest of the song reflects on the way that this brief romance impacted the rest of their lives. The refrain, "For those 5 days in May / Made all the stars around them shine," captures the idea that even though the relationship was short-lived, it had a powerful impact on both individuals. The song ends on a melancholy note, musing on the ways that circumstances can impact our lives and relationships - even those that seem the most beautiful and profound.

Overall, Five Days in May is a poignant reflection on the way that unexpected connections can change the trajectory of our lives. It highlights the fleeting and ephemeral nature of human relationships, as well as the joy and sadness that can come when we take a leap of faith and connect deeply with someone else.

Seen this band Twice...
One was when I stood out in the cold of toronto.
It was general admission.
So glad I froze my ass off.
They warmed me up as I was in second row.
I'll never forget it!
I love this band soooo much!
That was 20 years ago and I'm only 43...
Lol sooo worth it ,
I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Blue Rodeo was criminally overlooked in the States. I can just remember these guys hitting the airwaves around 1990 as I was graduating high school, starting college. Good honest band playing good honest music and I made a committment to keep track of them. Then, grunge and the alternative wave hit, and they got lost in the flotsam. It wasn't until the dawn of the internet that I was able to go back and search them out and catch up on some of their music. Damn good band. Damn good songs.
